Legendary comedian and education advocate Bill Cosby performed to a sold out audience at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place on June 30 raising more than $25,000 in support of the students of Urban Prep Academies. The events leading up to that night began more than a year and a half ago when Urban Prep’s CEO Tim King received a call from Cosby. After the amazement wore off, they had a 45 minute conversation during which time the entertainer said he wanted to do something to help the school because, “I think what you are doing is spectacular,” King quoted the comedian as saying. Cosby did just that, and during an almost 90 minute set he stayed true to his conversational comedy roots, riffing on everything from child rearing to getting older, to marriage during your senior years all while raising funds for the schools and inspiring its students. He ended the evening by signing copies of his latest book, “Come On, People - On the Path from Victims to Victors”.
Urban Prep Academies was founded in 2002 by Tim King and a group of African-American education, business and civic leaders who wanted to improve the educational opportunities available to urban boys. In 2005, this nonprofit organization was approved to open Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men – Englewood Campus. Urban Prep is the country's first charter public high school for boys. Since accepting its first class in the fall of 2006, Urban Prep has been recognized internationally for its success in improving the academic, social and emotional development of urban young men. Urban Prep now operates three schools in Chicago with about 1,200 students, all African-American males. 100% of Urban Prep's graduates have been admitted to college. The Urban Prep Motto is We Believe.
Keep up the great work Tim King, the world needs more people like you and Mr. Cosby! (www.urbanprep.org)
