When legendary bandleader/pianist/bon vivant Stanley Paul says it's the BEST party he's been to in 40 years then you know it's one helluva party! The Peninsula's 10th Anniversary Party was the hottest ticket in town....and the hardest invite to get despite having two well-known crashers still managing to find a way in! It enveloped the entire hotel and every area was recreated into a fantastic party space. Upon entering, two lines of champagne-bearing waiters greeted you. Towering geishas on stilts roamed the property, outside in the tented area, inside in the grand dining room, outdoors on the packed terrace, in the Avenues Restaurant which was transformed into a hot nightclub and even in the bar area which was turned into a blues club. For the 1000 invited guests, there was a visual feast for the eyes in every corner....including Aloft Circus performers and fantastic taiko drummers set up on two levels on the gorgeous terrace.
It was a perfect night for a party...with a gentle breeze and the type of temperatures Chicagoans wait all winter for. Exquisite, giant floral arrangements (Tom Kehoe, of course!) were everywhere you looked and the FOOD! OMG! I've never seen anything like it....Executive Chef Kai Lerman had mounds of caviar, oysters, carving stations, sushi stations, oysters, crab legs, lobster, various Chinese dishes, Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, foie gras, a liquid nitrogen station, roast suckling pig ....anything you could imagine and it was there in huge mounds that kept being replenished. I imagine heaven must be a bit like this...The service was so incredible that no one was ever left standing with an empty plate or glass.
The event was hosted by Sir Michael Kadoorie, Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited and The Peninsula Chicago's GM and Regional VP, Maria Razumich-Zec. The theme of the celebration was "Peninsula Past, Present and Future" as the hotel was transformed to pay tribute to the various Peninsula hotels in Asia, U.S. and the upcoming property set to debut in Paris in 2013. Bill Kurtis served as the MC for this exciting evening that also included the Ken Arlen Orchestra, well known blues performer Lonnie Brooks, Freddie & Amy and awesome DJs Deep Blue Fields and Mark Picchiotti
It was an honor to have been invited to this elegant celebration for the Pen's 10th Anniversary. I can't imagine how they could ever top this but I know they will! Huge congrats to GM Maria Zec, Catering Director Greg Hyder, Executive Chef Kai Lerman, PR Director Susan Ellefson, Director of Marketing Marc Anderson and all of the rest of the staff of this GRAND hotel! Oh, what a night!
