Jimmy Butler and Malcolm Thomas were named All-Stars for the 2012 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
Butler, who was the Bulls' first-round draft pick in 2011, was the 4th-leading scorer in Vegas (20.8 ppg). In the four games he played, he shot 43.1% overall but 50% (4/8) from behind the arc. Most impressively, he got to the FT line 39 times and made 35 of his attempts (89.7%). Butler was also second on the Bulls in rebounding (6.5) and assists (2.0).
Thomas, who went undrafted out of San Diego State in 2011 and played in the D-League last season, was perhaps the surprise player of the entire league. He posted double-doubles in the Bulls' first four games, and despite only playing 19 minutes in the finale, he averaged 11.4 points and 12.4 rebounds in 27.8 minutes for the week.
His 12.4 rebounds per game far and away led all players in Vegas (Markieff Morris and Thomas Robinson tied for second at 9.8), and he shot 53.5% from the field and 78.6% from the line. He also led the Bulls with 1.4 blocks, and his 1.4 assists were good for fourth on the team.
Butler is expected to take the majority of Ronnie Brewer's minutes with the Bulls this season, and the team is working to sign Thomas to a one-year deal so they can bring him to training camp as well. Thomas has drawn a lot of interest around the league, however, and the Bulls may have to guarantee his contract if they want to get a better look at him during the preseason.
