The 7 foot love-hate relationship

I really do have a 7 foot love-hate relationship. It's 7 feet of slim, green beauty and frustration.

It's my Christmas tree.

Every year, after Christmas and the New Year, it gets boxed up and put in the attic. This is no small feat. The attic is really hard to get into, and only my hubby can get up there.

Later that same year, over Thanksgiving weekend, the tree comes back out of the attic and awaits being reassembled.

I prefer the pre-lit trees, because the worst part of putting up the tree is stringing the lights. When my first pre-lit tree started to fall apart two years ago, I waited for the after-Christmas sales and bought a new one.

Two years ago. TWO.

When we took it out of the attic, my girls and I were very excited to put it up overThanksgiving weekend and get it decorated. However.....

(admit it, you knew there was a "however" coming)...when we put it up, put it together and plugged it in, this is what we got:

prelit tree thats not prelit

SERIOUSLY?!? Yup. Can you imagine the look on my kids' faces when THIS is what we got? There are lights ALL over this tree. Unfortunately most of them don't work.

On top of that, I didn't have any other lights in my house that worked either, except for the net lights I use on the bushes outside. Oh, believe me, I was tempted.

Target is my store of choice for these things, but you couldn't pay me to go to a Target on Black Friday, or Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. So, this is all we had for a couple of days.

Today, my youngest and I stopped as boutique Targét after church to pick up some lights. It was busy, but not terrible. Thank you, God.

My oldest, the one who is most excited about putting up the tree, came down with a fever today, and couldn't go with.

See that shiny, silver bucket in the bottom left corner of the pic? That's the "bucket" my sleeping girl has in hand, just in case, since she's feeling sick to her stomach. Love this time of year, really I do.

So where's the love-hate relationship?

I love Christmas. I love everything about it - the lights, the decorations, the creepy Elf on the Shelf, the change in people's spirits about being generous and giving, celebrating Jesus' birthday, the Christmas cards, the music... I really could just go on and on.

I HATE that I have to put new lights on my prelit tree. THAT drives me crazy.

Hopefully, by tomorrow night, the tree will have it's lights lit and the ornaments adorning it, because right now, it's looking an awful lot like a tree you'd see during the Charlie Brown Christmas special.

Yup, it's definitely a 7 foot love-hate relationship. Here's to hoping for more "love" than "hate" by tomorrow.

James 1:2-4 (NIV)

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

James 5:14 (NIV)

14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.
