Movie Review - The Hangover Part 2

Movie Review - The Hangover Part 2

While nursing my own hangover from the quick end of the Bulls season I opted to see "Hangover 2." Now I will tell you up front that I was in the minority in thinking that the original was not all that funny. Silly with some embarrassing moments for sure but no where near rip roaring laughter. And with that I'm not happy to tell you that the sequel was even worse. And it wasn't just me. In a theater half full on a Friday morning I didn't hear so much as a chuckle until the final credits rolled. I might have heard some snoring but no laughing.

The follow up has the boys going over to Asia for Ed Helms wedding. Along for the ride are his sidekicks, Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis. And would someone please tell me why Galifianakis is considered funny. He's just another over weight insufferable character who doesn't make me laugh in the least. For years now Hollywood has been trying to come up with substitutes for John Belushi and John Candy but Galifianakis is not in their league.

The sequel has the same premise as the original. The boys start with an innocent night out and next thing you know they wake up in Bangkok and have no clue what happened over the last twelve hours. Gee how original for the writers to cop out with the same stupid plot. Helms has a tattoo on his face (no idea how it got there,) Galifianakis has his head shaved (again no idea) and Cooper just preens even in a tattered state.

The boys run into a host of shenanigans before finally heading back (just in time) for Helms wedding to a beautiful Thai woman. In the original the audience was treated to Mike Tyson and his tiger. In the sequel we still get a dose of Tyson, and this time the leading role by an animal is played by a cigarette-smoking monkey. You heard me right.

I recently wrote that the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise finally got stale with the fourth installment. Well I'm here to tell you that the "Hangover" franchise is already stale with the initial follow up.

If you want to laugh then put on the Cubs game and watch them try and play defense but you wont laugh at this drek. Just a weak single - one star for "Hangover 2".

  • I have to disagree. I enjoyed the first movie quite a bit, but sort of agree that is wasn't the rip roaring laughfest many made it out to be. I don't believe that the second is as identical to the first movie as many critics have stated. After all, what should people expect? It is "The Hangover 2". Are the characters supposed to experience something different this time around? Of course the premise will be similar.

I think the Hangover 2 plays to a slightly different audience than the first. This movie is a bit darker, and thus, will appeal more to viewers who are able to find humor, rather than take offense, in some truly decadent humor.

If you can laugh at the idea of a donkey show, you'll love the Hangover 2.

  • Yes, I've read it's one big lead up to the credits/very end. Guess if you think of it that way....

  • Give us 5 films in the last decade you would say produced "rip roaring laughter."

    ...and no, Atonement doesn't count.

Not sure this one's up on The Hangover/40 Year Old Virgin level imo.

    Still funny though.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

If you've seen "Between 2 Ferns" and clips of Zach's stand up and still don't find him funny then perhaps an antidepressant is in order.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

    ^^^ bingo, that's one.

    Maybe, 40 Year Old Virgin

The reason guys like the Hangover and probably Hangover 2 because its a guy night out that is just crazy and pretty funny.

I mean, getting tazered was funny, crazy wth chinese man jumping out of car, and Zach isn't that bad of an actor as you think. I thought he was being considered for a academy award and I hate his characters but he plays them great.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

I agree. Its totally worth it (and Im a girl) and Zach is an amazing actor!

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

That's what I'm getting at, a lot of what I think are "rip roaring laughter" type films don't come out that often anymore. The Hangover is one.

Planes Trains & Automobiles, Rush Hour, Blues Brothers, Stripes, & Animal House all were/are hilarious but all came out more than a decade ago.

Americans are starving for entertainment at any cost. Hang Over II took advantage of this & the fact that it was Memorial Day Week-end. People brought little children to see this movie that stressed sucking someones penis, transvestites & drug usage....haha ha. Oh yeah and white males rule, even over in Bangkok!!Stay tuned for the ramifications.

  • In reply to gwill:

The Hangover Part 2 is racist towards Asians. To all Asians -- BOYCOTT THIS MOVIE. In fact, I've created a website for that purpose:

    http://asianboycottleague.wordpress.com/

It's meant to be used as a petition. Please comment on the site to pledge that you will not watch the Hangover 2 or any movies similar to it.

  • In reply to gwill:

This movie is going to rock. I can't wait for it to come out.
    Funny Quotes from The Hangover

  • Lord, all of these bad reviews are depressing- it just shows how people really expect a movie to be the new found religion. If folks would relax and just enjoy the moment they'll will find the humor in a simple thing called life which is what this movie showcases. I saw it at the premiere and wrote a no detail telling review that said it ROCKED! Saw it again today! Maybe you needed a shot of Henny prior to the show just to loosen you up.
