The triple threat from Harry Potter

I got dragged, or maybe I should say I volunteered to go see a midnight showing of new Harry Potter movie.  This, as most of you know is the final installment of the wildly popular books by J.K. Rowling.

Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione must seemingly do battle against evil Lord Voldemort all by themselves.  Their goal is to search for the four remaining "horcruxes," inanimate objects that have pieces of the evil overlord's soul.  If they can destroy these objects, it will render Voldemort vulnerable.

At the same time the evil forces have taken over the Ministry of Magic, which is like evil forces taking over college football.  Oh, I'm sorry, that already happened.  Well you know what a mess Division One football is, so you can imagine how that affects the world of wizards and regular humans (muggles.)

This is a very dark, sinister film.  Other than a little love triangle thing going on with Ron-Hermione-Harry and Hermione-Harry-Ron's sister, the movie has a lot of evil overtones. Most of the plot seems to set up for a big battle between the good guys and the very evil people.

Professor Snape is supposed to be on the good team, but he still hanging out with the Lord Voldemort's team.

People die, people get hurt, and stuff gets stolen.  I got lost a few times with some of the references to older characters from earlier films/books, but somehow I got my bearings.

Part two comes out next July.  The movie gets a triple - three stars.  Nice action, decent story, great characters, but a bit long at 146 minutes

  • 3 1/2 stars for me. We saw it last night in a full theater that adds to the enjoyment. It's well-paced, well-acted, well-written and...well...has stunning special effects. I didn't feel it was too long at all. My half star off was because of the sound mix. There are too many times when the dialogue is impossible to understand. Can't wait for Part 2!!
