WICKED is one my favorite shows and I have seen several productions. In my opinion none could stand up to the production I saw in New York on Broadway starring Kristen Chenoweth as Glinda and Idina Menzel as Elphaba. I was sure that no one would be able to do it better…until now. The Broadway in Chicago production of WICKED, now playing at the Oriental Theatre is just as good if not a tad better.
WICKED begins before Dorothy lands in Oz. How did the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch of the North come to be? It is a wonderful and touching story of two very different girls who become best friends.
It also is the story of injustice and prejudice. I found it to be very relevant to what is going on in our world today; still it is a show for the entire family. I would suggest that seven years and up would be a good age for children to see and understand it. I was sitting next to a seven year old and he was asking great questions throughout the production. “Why don’t they like her?” “She’s green but she is pretty. I like her.” Out of the mouths of babes, my heart was in a puddle by the end of the show.
Ginna Claire Mason as Glinda is amazing. Her voice is so clear and strong while she jumps around and brings so much energy to the stage. I was actually tired after every song she sang after watching her dance, move, and be everywhere at once. She is so much fun. Mary Kate Morrissey is Elphaba (yes, the Wicked Witch of the West has an actual name.) She is fantastic and brings so many wonderful dimensions to the role. Her voice is outstanding and you can’t help but really like Elphaba and root for her.
The set, costumes, ensemble actors, choreography, music are all well done. I was singing “Popular” for a week after I saw the show. I am sure you will too.
WICKED will be at the Oriental Theatre thru January 21, 2018, it is worth SPENDING THE MONEY and enjoying a night or matinee at the theatre.
Until next time, keep your EYE to the sky!
