I remember seeing the film "SPARKLE" for the first time back in 1976. Irene Cara played the role of Sparkle and Philip Michael Thomas was her boyfriend Stix. My friends and I sang "Something He Can Feel" all the way home and beyond.
It is now 2012, and everyone is excited about the remake of the film which will open in August. I am glad they waited because the cast is perfect. Jordin Sparks was born to play Sparkle and words cannot describe how much everyone was waiting to see Whitney Houston's performance as Sparkle's mother.
To kick off the count down to the opening of the film, Sony Pictures an Myspace are sponsoring a SPARKLE SINGING CHALLENGE, on Saturday, July 14th, 3PM at Orland Square Mall in Orland Park, Illinois.
If you are between the ages of 13 and 40 you can enter to win a Grand Prize of a trip to New York, an appearance on BET's 106 & Park, a recording session and a Myspace homepage feature.
When I heard about this I brushed off my hairbrush microphone and was ready for the challenge. However, after reading the rules I didn't fit in the age category, and after trying out my hairbrush mic in front of my bedroom mirror I realize that I couldn't pull off the required 60 second acappella version of CELEBRATE or SOMETHING HE CAN FEEL.
Perhaps YOU will have better luck. Go to www.myspace.com/sparkle for more information. I am anxious to know how you made out.
Until next time, keep your EYE to the Sky!
