Why does the Chicago Tribune force me to cancel my subscription?

Old-school as we are, we have hard copy newspaper subscriptions to both the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times. Everyday PLONK goes the satisfying sound of news in glorious black & white. And anyhow how the hell do two people read different news on one iPad? It’s clearly a family thing. Our son reads newspapers... Read more »

Crypt Keeper & Chicago Tribune

Only days before Halloween, before Days of the Dead…Be afraid. Be very, very afraid. For the Australian crypt keeper is trolling the streets and rivers of Chicago in search of fresh newspapers to chew up, spit out and destroy. Rumor has it, Rupert Murdoch has his gimlet eyes on Chicago and LA. http://mediamatters.org/blog/2012/10/25/chicago-tribune-la-times-veterans-fear-possible/190927 Given the... Read more »

Grandma Twitter and the Baby Boomers

Having spent the past two months mentoring various friends and family in social media as we traveled about the USA, The Husband turned to me this morning after tea to say–“You know, you should write a blog (or book) about it.” About what? I asked, truly puzzled. About social media-because a lot of our friends... Read more »

Pissing away tomorrow

There you go–again–Mitt. Grousing on the op-ed page of the Chicago Tribune that, golly gee, so few of our NATO posse want to spend at least 2% of their budget on the military, i.e. welfare for the military industrial purveyors of death and destruction, or as I think of it “Billions for Boeing” . Silly Europeans,... Read more »

Trib Posts Record Profits

What a headline! The Chicago Tribune posts RECORD profits!! Didn’t see it, neither did I. And now I know, you never will. All I tried to do was put the hard copy subscription of my Chicago Tribune on hold, for about 40 days. Hadn’t www.nytimes.com let me put my New York Times hard copy subscription on hold?... Bribery, every body does it.

Stop right there. What are you, a teenager? The argument that it is okay to do something that it is most assuredly not okay to do because “every body does it,” sounds like the reasoning of an adolescent wanting a later curfew. Really. America I hate to give you any factual information, but no. Everybody... Read more »

A question of skin

(All quotes are from the Chicago Tribune article of January 22, 2012) When I opened my Sunday Chicago Tribune to the headline, “Remap driven by race issues, self-preservation” I felt physically ill. A large gulp of hot black tea mixed with a dash of almond milk brought me back to my senses as I glanced... Read more »

Last Newspaper Subscriber Standing Canceling?

It’s my age, I like a hard copy of the newspaper. And I like it in hand, not on some gizmo…a newspaper. Remains of a tree. So yes, I pay through the nose to get the New York Times–the hard copy of it, daily. What joy. Like chocolate, rich and creamy writing–without the calories. And... Read more »

    Candace Drimmer

I was an accidental expatriate; love and marriage led me to it. One day I was a bandy-legged kid sitting atop my dogwood tree looking out of my small backyard world in 1950s New Jersey, wanting to move somewhere--anywhere, different. Next thing I knew my father had accepted a job in Houston TX. I was ecstatic, it was a foreign land in 1961 America. After high school graduation, my parents’ gave me a matched set of fawn-colored hardsided American Tourister luggage. Taking the hint, I went to college; well four colleges in five years--it was the 60s after all. Meeting a young hirsute anti-war, soon-to-be-Peace Corps volunteer, I fell in love. After finishing up college coursework for my degree, but before I even walking a graduation stage, I grabbed the paper airline ticket my boyfriend had sent me, my brand-new passport, and was off to the airport and Lima, Peru.
