But having survived into my 80s, I admit I take refuge in Noel Coward: "Whenever I feel like going out for a run, I take to my couch until the feeling passes." Please, isn't there some midway point between wellness and happiness...?

    Jack~Hello! It sounds like you have some hard working children. What a great feeling it must be to know your children work at a job that helps saves people's lives!
    On to your question. I do think there is a middle ground in terms of fitness and life. First, you should establish what your goals are. At this point in life are you looking to run a marathon, stay away from medications or make ensure that you live the quality of life you'd enjoy? Think about what you want to accomplish. At that point figure out the best way to help you get that. Maybe its not running outside, but trying a new activity. Trying a class, hiring a trainer to incorporate new exercises or finding a new activity that inspires you. One of these things may spark a new desire to be active.
    Most importantly, don't beat yourself up. I see ups and downs in terms of fitness and motivation all the time. Stay positive! Let me know if you have any other questions or if these things have helped.
