5 tips to help you stay on track with your summer goals

Summer goals can be hard to keep with all the fun going on, but here are 5 tips to help you stay on track.

1) Switch up your routine: Start adding interval training to your cardio routine.  Add inclines or do a "random program" on the treadmill.  Switch it up completely and check out a spinning class instead.  The instructor and music will be sure to keep you going.  I love Go Cycle studios for spinning.  If you haven't added strength training to your workout be sure to do so.  The more muscle you have the more calories your body burns at rest.

2) Eat clean most days of the week: There are tons of BBQ'S, baseball games and fun outings this time of year.  It can be really difficult to make healthy decisions all the time.  Take a look at your week and see if there's an event you might want to splurge at.  Be sure the rest of the days you are making good choices and watching portions.  Then go ahead and enjoy your event.  Just remember to stop eating when you're full.  Even if it is the most delicious dessert you've ever had.

3) Try out a fun summer activity: Grab a friend and try a new activity.  Go rollerblading with a friend or rent a bike for the day.  Keeping your activities fun will make you want to continue them.  You'll also be utilizing different muscles than your normally do, which is great for your body.

4)Stay away from hidden calorie traps: It can be very tempting to grab a frozen coffee drink, fruit smoothie or shake.  Some of them can have over 1,000 calories.  That splurge can completely ruin all your hard work for the week.  Check out Protein Bar for a cool drink- the calories are listed right on the menu.  That way you can make an educated decision.

5) Reward Yourself: Give yourself a reward when you've gone a week of sticking to your goals.  Determine what your weekly reward will be, and then choose a monthly reward.  Choose rewards other than foods.  Perhaps you want a new pair of gym shoes, a massage or a new bag from lululemon.  Either way work hard to get yourself that goal.

Have a fun and fit day, Chicago.
