This Saturday is the Grand finals match for the Chicago Netball Club. Now you might be asking yourself what is Netball? Netball is a widely popular sport played throughout the world, With over 20 million women and girls playing netball today. Shockingly, Netball was created here in the United States. Yet is is widely popular in places such as Africa, England, Asia and the Caribbean. Netball is even a prime-time TV sport in the United Kingdom and many others.
Netball is similar to women's basketball, however there are some major differences. Here are the details of the game:
1. There are seven players in a team and they each have their own position
2. Each player is only allowed to move in a certain area of the court
3. This means team-work and strong passing skills are very important
4. Only TWO players are allowed to try and score goals
5. No backboard on the hoop
6. No dribbling
7. No running with the ball
8. Cannot hold the ball for more than 3 seconds
9. Cannot take the ball out of the oppositions hands
10. Defenders must defend 3 feet away from the player with the ball
11. Each goal is worth 1 point
12. Game is one hour long with 15 minute quarters
Based on these parameters, Netball is definitely a team sport. It is one of the reasons it is considered an empowering sport for women in other countries. Many girls grow up playing netball in school.
