In a tough economic time I know it is hard to give to all the charities you would like to. I personally try my best by donating time, getting the word out there and monetarily donating as much as I can. One organization that I work with is called Dream for the Stars. Dream for the Stars is an affiliate organization of Wings. Wings is a shelter and transitional program for women and children affected by domestic violence.
With domestic violence on the rise the Wings program needs your help more than ever. They are having their biggest fundraiser of the year and it ends this coming Wednesday. Chicago Dream Home Raffle is a fundraiser in which you could win your dream home or 1,000,000 dollars. If you cannot purchase a ticket perhaps there is some other way that you can help out. You can donate any amount specifically to the raffle fundraiser.
Wings home happens to be the largest shelter for women in the midwest. Due to the state budget, WINGS does not receive DHS funding for their emergency safe house. They need to raise 1 million dollars a year to keep the safe house open with aggressive fundraisers such as this one. This shelter has helped so many women. Watch here to hear how it saved one woman's life:
I know that it may not be possible to do this alone. But perhaps your company or a group of friends may want to get together to buy a raffle ticket. Or maybe you know someone who may like to help.
I know so many of you do so much for our community. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for great organizations in Illinois. Let's see if we can help this program meet their goal!
Julie,
Thanks for adding to the importance of bringing this organization to everyone's attention. Hopefully we can reach lots of people and get them the funding they need!
Sorry to rain on the parade here, but 'Wings' is just another example of a sexist, feminist organization that turns a nearly-blind eye to half of all domestic violence victims - that would be the MALE victims.
Before someone spouts that '95 percent' myth, do some REAL checking into the facts. The KNOWN percentage of male victims is over 35% and the real number is likely much higher. Males today are as unwilling to report being a DV victim as women were decades ago.
I know this shelter has zero beds for men. If a male victim actually succeeds in convincing them he needs help, he MIGHT get a hotel voucher where he will sit alone. A woman, on the other hand, will get a bed in the shelter, peer group support, counseling, and even home-cooked meals.
We've banned 'separate but equal' in the racial context; now it's time to ban it in the context of domestic violence victims.
I agree that we need more housing and services for men. WINGS helps men with counseling if they call. To your point, men have societal issues against them so they do not call for help. This makes it look like men do not need help. If we could ever get the funding, we would open housing for men also. The sad truth is that there is very little funding to help any victims of domestic violence, women or men.

Whether you get hunches or see dead people, you have intuition--and you can shape it, direct its use, and develop it as a skill. My blog is intended to take intuition to the streets--from paranormal to pretty normal.
Joe, Thank you for acknowledging what a great organization this is. Any positive feedback about its value will only help the organization!

If WINGS is receiving public funds, WINGS is guilty of gender discrimination.
