With the colder months looming ahead, many of us seek out comfort food. Warm hearty food, like pasta, soup, and chili, for example. On a day like today, when I am completely exhausted from carrying around 3 bags, a wind blown umbrella and getting pelted in the face with rain, (oh and not to mention the 5 degree temperature drop in the last 3 hours), all I want is warm food that makes me feel nice and cozy.
It is easy during these times to forget your fitness goals and good nutritional habits. Just because its winter does not mean you want to forget all of your hard work you've done this summer (or think its too late to start working on your goals). Before reaching for that splurge, think about what you're actually eating.
Maybe you can tweak some of your favorite recipes to make them more health friendly. Here are a few ideas on some warm foods to keep you toasty in the winter:
1) Chili-maybe you have a favorite recipe. Try substituting ground
beef for ground turkey or chicken if you don't do so already.
2) Pasta-Eat whole grain pasta instead of regular. Try making your own
sauce, that way you can control the amount of sodium and fat in the
sauce. Usually, the thicker and creamier the sauce the more fattening
3) Soup- A great way to warm up. Be sure to check the sodium content
if you are not making the soup. Too much sodium can bloat you, which
will make might make you think you are gaining weight. (it could
potentially make you look like it too). Creamy soups, again, will
usually have a more fat in them. Try soups with vegetables to get your
4) Apple Slices- heat them up in the microwave with a little bit of cinnamon.
5) Oatmeal- Steel cut oatmeal with cinnamon and bananas. Oatmeal has a
good amount of fiber, vitamin E, Zinc and protein. Individuals who
consume oats have a lower rate of heart disease than those who don't.
6) Latte with Skim Milk
7) Hot Tea- try a new flavor before bedtime for a nice little treat.
There are so many more options to choose from. These are just a few of
