Okay, by popular request, I finally decided to try Full Tilt Poker's new Rush Poker software.
Although the new game's very concept seems to me to be both ridiculously irresponsible and unintelligent, Rush Poker has captured the attention of the poker world since its debut on January 19, with Full Tilt team member and software designer Chris Ferguson calling it "the greatest innovation in online poker since poker started on the Internet."
Hyperbole aside, Rush Poker does seem innovative and should prove to be extremely popular. So, in the name of responsible journalism, and general curiosity, I braved the possible bankroll hit and took a look at this new way to lose money.
A Brief Explanation of the Game
By now I'm sure a few of you less up-to-date readers are wondering what the hell I'm talking about.
Well, I have to admit, Rush Poker is brilliantly simple.
Gamblers love action--really, really love action--but poker's action tends to be cut up by minutes, sometimes hours, of monotonous standard play.
So Full Tilt created an online ring game where hundreds of players can sign up to sit down at the same time.
The game works by randomly dividing the pool of players into separate tables. The beauty of this new form of poker is that once a player folds his/her hand they are immediately shipped to another table.
What this all means is that players never have to be waiting on action, they simply can push the "quick fold" button and then will receive a new hand, table and group of opponents.
Full Tilt Poker's Phil Gordon Explains Rush Poker
Wait, What the F#%K?
Anybody see a major problem with this?
Poker is a social game, much of its strategy lies in reading different people and positions, and Rush Poker seems to totally remove this community aspect of the game.
Look I love action as much as the next guy, but in the time that I spent playing Rush Poker there were no moments where I could use my ability to read people's tendencies, and that kind of pisses me off. Rush Poker simply devolved the game into one of pure statistical analysis.
And I do mean devolved, games like blackjack and three card poker are great and all, but they don't have the rich details in their play that poker does.
Poker is a game of long, drawn out strategies that can take days, weeks, even years to pull off.
Rush Poker, however, streamlines poker's actions, creating a product so similar to video poker and slots that I dare call this new version of the game "poker crack." And like regular crack, I see a very real danger of over stimulating a person's brain when used.
Rush Poker: like this, but you get to keep your teeth
Still Worth a Try
Unlike crack, however, I believe Rush Poker still has a place under the grand umbrella that is the game of poker.
Just like matrix tournaments, bounty games and sit and goes aren't exactly pure poker but still are useful games to master--at least in my mind--Rush Poker deserves its own spot in the poker universe.
I think it's a great game for learning how to dump bigger hands out of position and it certainly helps players figure out how much pressure to use in late position.
Rush poker also exposes you to thousands of hands per hour, as opposed to a couple hundred multitabling normal ring games online, and, therefore, lets novice players learn standard plays for thousands of situations quickly--plays that normally would take years to master.
Ultimately, though, Rush Poker's biggest selling point is that it's truly a blast to play.
Like I said, this is like poker crack and Rush Poker can be addicting. The graphics involved in switching tables is enough to make you want to fold and I noticed that when one gets deep into a Rush Poker session that the "quick fold" button almost seems like it's calling out to you to be pressed.
So I guess I'd recommend Rush Poker, if for nothing else but as a good stress reliever. However be warned, this isn't something that will really make you rich quick and if you choose to multitable Rush Poker--and god help you if you do--you might find yourself being almost chemically drawn to pressing the "quick fold button."
Let me get this straight? "Well, I have to admit, Rush Poker is brilliantly simple. " ...Really? NOT
"The game works by randomly dividing the pool of players into separate tables. The beauty of this new form of poker is that once a player folds his/her hand they are immediately shipped to another table." - Is this the same "random" generator that "randomly" generates the cards being dealt during an online poker game?
"Look I love action as much as the next guy, but in the time that I spent playing Rush Poker there were no moments where I could use my ability to read people's tendencies, and that kind of pisses me off." - Wait a minute, didnt you just say "Well, I have to admit, Rush Poker is brilliantly simple. " - You are making as much sense as these rigged sites.
"So I guess I'd recommend Rush Poker..." Again, nonsense.....
Rush Poker is only another way for FT to get more rake, and at a faster pace. Chris Ferguson said that this Rush Poker is "the greatest innovation in online poker since poker started on the Internet." -- Well Chris, I have lost all ye faith in you. I am sure there are tens of thousands of others who agree. Chris, you are a tournament player...oh wait.. I forgot you also have a percentage of the company.. No wonder you make those claims. You all get quite a bit of that rake huh. How many bots are playing in Rush Poker? Any shills? This is the most asinine version of poker i have ever laid eyes on.
If you want to play real poker, look up NonRiggedPoker.com they are US based and legal in the United States. I wonder if this post will get taken down because i posted a link. A link mind you that is legal to play in the US. Anyways, why would the US be promoting a gaming site when online opker is suppose to be illegal.
STAND UP PLAYERS!!! Make Poker Legal PROPERLY We support MakePokerLegal.com and not full tilt aka "rigg" poker
Do you have any data or other information to support your claims of Full Tilt or any other poker site having a deciding vote in the outcome of a hand on their site? I feel they make enough money running an honest poker site, yes, by a very modest rake, to worry about resorting to such underhanded means of profiting.
And it's okay that parts of Rush Poker pissed off WCR and he also finds it brilliantly simple... The same way a stoplight rolling to red as I pull up can piss me off, but I understand the workings behind it. Don't confuse his intentions.
And you are right that Rush Poker is a way for FT to get a faster rake, but there is also a market for it. Go see how many people are playing right now... Several hundred, if not thousands... if there was such a problem with the rake, no one would be playing. But people find the rake to be modest enough, and the game to be enjoyable enough, to sit down.
As far as your site, I wish you a lot of luck, but I personally have more faith in the randomization of the big boys out there, such as Tilt and Pokerstars, because I'm certain their services get audited frequently, checking for improper randomization and automated players with the company. Lord knows who looks into, or even knows about, your site.
You are kidding right? the several thousands that "may" be playing Rush Poker are prob the ones that always reload and reload. You mean to tell me that you are one of the ones who think it inst rigged? You must be a shill or something because you appear to be smarter than that, but I can be wrong. Our poker room, we are doing great. we have a few hundred thousand players already. Plus we give out cash prizes of 100,000 every month plus the UFC and TapOut and others are apart of the prizes as well. oh and I forgot to mention that we have NBC Heads Up Championship tourneys where you will be able to play in the NBC Heads Up Championship. Plus every 15 minutes a new game starts 24 hours a day.We are doing strong, thanks for the warm wishes!! You say that you are sure that they get audited, I pose the question, How do you know, and can you support those claims? Who audits them, an out of the country audit team? Again you are appearing to be dumber as I read your reply. You must be affiliated with one of those sites right? The market for Rush Poker are the fish, cause they are the ones constantly feeding the cash to these "rigged" sites. Now the higher limit games may not be as "rigged" as the micro limit games, but then again those who are well informed already know this. Give it time and you will eat your words. In the mean time Ill be with the other hundreds of thousands of players on NonRiggedPoekr.com
I consider myself relatively well-read in all things poker, as it is a major hobby of mine. While I can’t recall exactly where I read about online security safety, it was likely several sources, I’m sure I read somewhere about the security of the money and the integrity of the game play. I actually read Barry Greenstein discuss the security as “excessive,” in his book “Ace on the River.” In addition to this book, CardPlayer, Bluff, and several other poker news sites I keep tabs on, the consensus seems to be online poker is extremely secure. If you believe that they are all “in” on it, that’s your prerogative, but it doesn’t hold water to objective scrutiny.
I’ve yet to hear what your beliefs of a “rigged site” are based on. To be honest, based on your tone and word choice, it sounds like little more than conspiracy projection… an idea of “if it can be done, it is being done.” But I again point out the major flaw in this thinking: there is great business in an honest poker site. The NFL could make a lot of money by rigging games, paying off players to take a dive, and cashing in at the bookies. Do they? I would sincerely doubt it, because football in America is a multi-million dollar industry. Why risk that? It’s the same story with online poker.
If you are looking for a sincere debate on the legitimacy of online poker, and/or rush poker, I’d be happy to continue with this. If you are only looking to spin paranoid thoughts to tout your own website, I suggest you find another forum.
So poker is a hobby of yours too. Great! I myself have about 39 yrs experience in poker as well. Let's say that i know what I am talking about, maybe even more than you. If you think that some, or all are not "in on it" (using your words) then you need to apply some more time to your hobby. I know what you are referring to regarding Barry's book. I respect him very much.
Our "beliefs (as you put it) are as we speak getting ready to go public in the near future. The details of that you and the rest of the world will soon find out. I'm glad you brought up the NFL. You actually think that does not happen? You might want to seriously think about it again. Comparing the NFL to online poker... utterly ridiculous. you might be able to compare it when all these "non rigged" (as you would put it) would comply with the united states. good ole Full Tilt refused to, in fact there are several articles about it as well. Did you ever read those?
Another thing, Russ Hamilton comes to mind, opps that is right, there are excessive security measures in place right? I know you r probably going to say that was the past; well history tends to repeat itself. FT for instance has violated the RICO Act, and raised a lot of eyebrows. So has UB, Poker Stars to name a few. As i mentioned above, the near future, everyone will know the truth. I also think it is funny how the
"pro's" are "joining" the fight to legalize online poker, but you don't see their poker sites such as Full Tilt and UB, Poker Stars representing anything. We are not looking for a debate, you can debate till your blue inthe face. We are moving forward with all the plans that we have set forth regarding online poker. And for you to accuse or suggest that I am looking to spin paranoid thoughts, how can you spin something that thousands of people already know? And touting the website, let me set you straight. I came across this site, spoke with the owners, and their sponsors (whom are not some small time nickle and dime operation)and I stand behind them along with the hundreds of thousands of others. I mean NonRiggedPoker.com is a US based, US legal poker room so the hundreds of thousands (and counting) of poker players can play where they don't have to worry or even think about a "rig" They can play and better their game and win outstanding prizes as well. Those websites don't need a "tout" as they are doing very well and the groups that we have formed for our future projects are well lead, thought out, and designed. We are Americans, we stand for the truth! So please, if you are going to make that type of statement, make sure it has at least .01% of truth behind it. You do believe in the truth right?
Well, your thought process is a little scattered, but I’ll do my best to comment on your major points.
I never meant to imply that poker is not a hobby of yours… I would expect that it would be, considering the fact that we are debating this on a poker blog. Experience or not, online poker has not been around for 39 years, so having played for so many years is not relevant. I didn’t realize you were on a first name basis with Barry Greenstein, and that being the case, I would expect you to be well aware of his stance, and due to your tremendous respect for the man, perhaps take some heed in his opinion, much more so than some blog commenter, namely myself.
I look forward to whatever unraveling your company has planned to debase the major poker sites and expose them for the cheaters that they are… However, I find it very convenient to mention that your beliefs will be “going public” in the near future. If this were the case, and for whatever reason it was being kept under wraps until that time, I doubt you would be discussing it here. If it is not being kept under wraps, I’m surprised you don’t throw whatever defense that holds that argument at me here.
I don’t have the background to debate NFL commissioning with you, but your opinion that it, also, is someway controlled only lends to the conspiratorial persona that you are developing. I am aware of Full Tilt’s non-compliance to United States protocol, but I was under the impression that that resided more in complications with the UIGEA and not to Full Tilt’s underhanded operations.
I understand why you bring up Hamilton, but I don’t feel it lends to your conviction. The UB incident involved an inside employee feeding information about players to an outsider who then profited from the encounter. You are suggesting, if I understand correctly, that FT employs either real people or robots to play on the site and that FT software controls for these players to receive better cards and/or better information than the rest of the players. Thus, while no one will argue the legitimacy of the Hamilton incident, its inclusion here is not relevant.
As far as FT violating the RICO act, I don’t recall reading anything about that… If you had some literature on that, a link or something, I’d love to read up on it. My guess, though, is that this is, again, a complication with the UIGEA and has nothing to do with FT cheating in any way. So again, this is irrelevant for the discussion at hand
We also may not be clear on the definition of “spin.” By spin, I simply mean to portray something negative or unknown in a more positive or factual light. It has nothing to do with the subject’s popularity. So, even if thousands of people “know” this, it doesn’t prove it, and it doesn’t make it public knowledge.
If your intention is not to advertise your poker site, then how is it you can’t seem to post a comment without the full URL listed somewhere in it? I’m glad they are doing well enough that the advertisement it needs is on a Chicago-centered gambling blog, in the comments section, written by an individual who struggles with basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation. In terms of your .01% truth, I’m not sure about the varying degree of truth in the fact that you are posting these haphazard defenses along with a URL to advertise for some unknown poker site. My goal isn’t to deride your site. My goal is to point out the futility of the argument that online poker is in any way rigged. If you honestly believe the contrary, and are ready to prove otherwise here, right now, and not “in the near future,” without promoting your website, then I look forward to your response.
Now that it looks like you’re out of breath NonRiggedPoker.com let me address a few things...
First, thank you for commenting. I always appreciate new opinions and discussion and your debate with DrexxMac was one of the more interesting internet debates I've seen on this site in awhile. THANKS!
Second, I just have to quickly refer to your being around poker for 39 years, a bit. It’s not that I don't respect my elders, a group of which you obviously are a part of, but if you’re going to bring up experience in a written arena maybe you should acknowledge first that you’re not exactly knowledgeable of the journalistic reviewing process. I might not have your 12 years of hardcore poker experience (12 year in real life = 39 internet years)but I'm willing to guarantee you that I have far more writing and critical reviewing history. My big reason for doubting your critical review integrity is something Goose brought up. Your name man, come up with something else if you want to bring legitimacy to your case. Something like IspamFORfun or ZLLORT would have been fine and at least semi-difficult to see through.
Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of free advertising on my page—from one shill to another kick backs from major online poker sites don't pay what they use to—but I feel obligated to leave your statements up as reminder to people of how not to spam-sell their site on ChicagoNow.
Dude better be careful making claims that FTP and PS are "rigged"...because unless you have proof, and you get ID'd as someone with a stake in a competitor...you're going to get something in the mail from someone whose name ends in "Esq."
