Picasso's 1932 painting Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur (Nude, Green Leaves and Bust).Kicking off two weeks of important spring auctions and just a few months after my February 4 post about a record setting Giacometti, Picasso has regained his record for the most expensive work of art at auction.

On May 4, at Christie's in New York, Picasso's Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur (Nude, Green Leaves and Bust) sold for $106.5 million (including buyer's premium) just surpassing the $104.3 million paid for Giacometti's Walking Man I.

It will be interesting to see how another Picasso to be offered at Christie's in their upcoming London Impressionist and Modern Art sale on June 23, 2010 will do.  The painting, Portrait of Angel Fernandez de Soto, 1903, was executed during Picasso's highly acclaimed Blue Period and has an auction estimate of £30 million to £40 million.
