Washington Blade, the nations oldest LGBT newspaper has been shut down by it's publishers.
Based on a post over at Nightlife Gay, the Washington Blade, along with the other publications published by Window Media LLC - 411 Magazine, Southern Voice, Houston Voice, South Florida Blade & David Atlanta have ceased publication.
The following notice was posted on the company's door over the weekend: "It is with GREAT regret that we must inform you that effective immediately, the operations of Window Media, LLC and Unite Media, LLC have closed down. Please return to this office on WEDNESDAY, November 18th, 2009 at 11:00 AM to collect personal belongings and to receive information on your separation stipulations. Please bring boxes and/or containers that will allow you to collect all your personal belongings at one time."
I had the great pleasure of meeting the spouse of the editor of the Washington Blade when I was at Blog World Expo in Vegas last month - I am very sorry to hear about this great loss both to them and the community.
The Washington Blade just recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary of publishing an LGBT centric newspaper - the longest in the country, so it is very sad that we are losing that paper along with many other LGBT centric publications that Window Media published on the East Coast. I used to read Southern Voice when I lived in Atlanta.
There has been no update made to the Publishers website to indicate that the papers were shut down, other than a July 1 Press Release from this year indicating that the CEO had stepped down to pursue other opportunities.
This is sad news indeed!

Wow. I hate to see a vital voice disappear. I hope that these fine writers are able to get work elsewhere.
