101 Things to do with your Chicago Kid
Growing up in Chicago is pretty amazing. I should know. I grew up here and now I am watching my kids have a blast doing the same things that I did plus a whole lot more.
That is basically why I started writing this blog. I wanted to focus on all of the incredible opportunities for families in Chicago that just don't exist elsewhere.
I know that we are all busy and it is easy to get stuck in a rut. So I thought that it might be helpful to have a list of some of the absolute must-do activities for your Chicago kid.
This list could be called "1001 Things to do with your Chicago Kid." I know that I haven't listed every great event or activity. So chime in and let me know what we should add to this list-in-progress.
1. Eat deep dish pizza.
2. Go to a Bears game.
3. Go to a Blackhawks game.
4. Go to a Bulls game.
5. Go to a Cubs game . . .
6. And then go to a White Sox game and let your child choose which team HE prefers.
7. Go to the Adler Planetarium.
8. Visit the Shedd Aquarium.
9. Listen to the blues.
10. Make lots and lots of visits to the Museum of Science and Industry to see all of the same exhibits that were there when you were a kid (the baby chicks, the trains) and all of the ever-changing temporary exhibits.
Jump Rhythm Jazz Family Dance Matinee (plus some thoughts on why music and movement are good for your little ones)
In celebration of its 20th Anniversary Season, the Jump Rhythm Jazz Project will present "Jump Rhythm Technique and the Language of Rhythm" for the Family Dance Matinee at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 20 at The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago (1306 South Michigan Avenue).
This educational and entertaining, audience-interactive lecture-demonstration will begin at 2:15 p.m. with audience members joining the performers onstage for a parent/child movement workshop, followed by the 3 p.m. hour-long performance.
Jump Rhythm's program will provide an opportunity for families to experience the pleasures of both watching and doing Jump Rhythm's signature "full-bodied rhythm-making."
For tickets, call (312) 369-8330 or visit www.colum.edu/dancecenter. Family Dance Matinee tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children.
This sounds like a fabulous family event -- but don't just take my word for it. I had a chance to ask some of the moms on the Board of the Jump Rhythm Jazz Project about their thoughts on this event and the importance of music and movement for kids in general.
The "Mom Panel" included Board members and former Jump Rhythm Jazz dancers Kari Kudson Christopher (Benefit Committee Chair), Corey Yarnell Lozier (Board President), and Annie Beserra (Secretary-Treasurer).
Here is what they had to say.
Wee Windy City: Why should dance and music be a part of kids' lives? Tell us about the benefits you've witnessed in your work with children and movement.
Kari: Dance and music has been a big part of my children's lives. I have found that movement at a young age fulfills a great desire to express oneself and have fun (read to get energy out). It is natural for all little ones to want to move around when they hear music. I have seen my son's coordination develop as well as his confidence, as evidenced now in his athletic endeavors (he plays ice hockey). Music has contributed to the increase of my children's vocabulary and sense of rhythm. Lots of children's music has hand movements that go with the words (i.e. Itsy bitsy spider, wheels on the bus, etc.) which encourages coordination between their voice and their bodies as well as helps them to understand the meaning of the words. I believe being exposed to music and dance at an early age sets a solid foundation for later appreciation of the performing arts.
Corey: Dance and music should be a part of every child's life, without a doubt! The human brain is very complex, and there are many neurological links between academic or intellectual learning and movement. Music and movement also offer an emotional release, and another way, besides language, for a growing person to express himself. The benefits of including movement and music in a child's life are countless. In my work as a dance teacher for kids aged 3-18, as well as with my own 9-month old son, I have seen the impact that music and movement has. At the dance studio, I see children gaining confidence each time they master a step; I see them smiling when the are jumping and leaping through the air with abandon, just for the fun of it; I see them understanding rhythm and learning patterns and sequencing when we put together tap steps to jazz music. At home with my baby, I see him learning about cause and effect each time he bangs his hand on his drum and learning about the world around him each time I skip around the house with him in my arms.
Annie: Kiddos are born singing and dancing. I'm witnessing this first hand with my 6-week-old and 2-year-old. Those first cries and squirms quickly shift into simple compositions. My 2-year-old's latest hit is "Fire Boots," a tribute to his fireman styled rain boots that he sings as he stomp-marches up and down our hallway. Exposing kids to movement and music affirms these expressive instincts and gives them a place to share their experience. They see their own singing and dancing reflected in other people's voices and bodies, and suddenly singing and dancing becomes a way of knowing and experiencing community.

Q&A with Ralph Covert of Ralph's World
To celebrate the release of his new album All Around Ralph's World, Chicago-based children's musician Ralph Covert agreed to do a Q&A with Wee Windy City readers.
This is so exciting! Kids are wild about this guy. And as I mentioned before, he is the man behind my personal anthem -- M.O.M.M.Y. needs C.O.F.F.E.E.!
I put out a call for kids to submit their questions for Ralph. Chicago kids came up with some really clever questions. And Ralph has really cute answers.
Have a look at the Q&A below and then come back tomorrow for more Ralph's World!
I am giving away 3 copies of his new CD, All Around Ralph's World PLUS I have details on an upcoming free Ralph's World concert at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. So come back tomorrow!
Q: Ralph, how do you write your songs? Do you write it on a newspaper? Do you write it on music note paper? Do you write it in your house? Do you write it with a mouse? (Madeline S. , 6 years-old)
A: Yes, I write them in my house. Yes, I write them with a mouse -- the mouse on my computer, that is!

The Wee Weekender for January 15-18
Are you ready for the three-day weekend? Lots to do here in Chicago over the next few days.
To review, you have your pick of tons of Martin Luther King Day activities plus the chance to see The Laurie Berkner Band perform to help a good cause.
But there are a few more excellent family-friendly options that we haven't talked about yet.
Family Yoga at the Nature Museum. On Sunday, January 17th, the whole family can unwind with a yoga class as part of the REI Adventure Days at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.
Teddy Bear Hootenany at the Old Town School of Music. On Sunday, January 17th, kids can don jammies and grab their favorite teddy bear for this sing-a-long at the Lincoln Avenue location. The fun kicks off at 11:00 a.m.
On Saturday, January 16th, The Chicago Park District's Family Sports Workshop at Holstein Park offers the chance to work on that hook shot or perfect your swing? This clinic is for kids ages 3-5 (with an adult). The cost is $14 per child.
Happy (long) weekending to you, Chicago parents.

A Pajama Party Concert with The Laurie Berkner Band
On Sunday, January 17, the very popular Laurie Berkner Band is going to be performing at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan at 1:00 p.m. Sounds fun, right? But wait, there is more. This concert is not just your typical kiddie music show -- it is a pajama party to benefit The Pajama Program.
The band will be performing in their pjs. Kids and parents can come in their jammies. All attendees are encouraged to bring new pajamas and books to donate to The Pajama Program -- a great organization that provides pajamas to children entering foster care, many of whom arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The items
collected at the venue will go directly to children in need in the Chicago area.
Tickets are available for $25 and $35 through the box office (847/263-6300) or Ticketmaster.

Attention Ralph's World fans: Do you have a question for Ralph?
My kids are big Ralph's World fans. And truth be told, I really like his music as well.
After all, he is the man behind my personal anthem -- The Coffee Song ("M.O.M.M.Y. needs C.O.F.F.E.E. . . . ").
Ralph's World has a new album coming out in February called "All Around Ralph's World" -- which is sure to be another big hit with the kiddos.
In honor of the new album release, Ralph Covert himself has agreed to answer questions from his devoted Chicago fans.
That's right. If you have a burning question for Ralph, leave it in the comments or email it to me at weewindycity@gmail.com. I am going to forward all questions to Ralph and I will post his responses in early February.
Plus, I am going to be giving away several copies of the new Ralph's World CD (each person who submits a question will get an extra entry).
So let's hear it -- what do you want to ask Ralph from Ralph's World? What is his favorite song of all time? Best venue he has even performed in? What was the inspiration for "Surfin' in my Imagination?" Has he ever met a Green Gorilla? All questions should include your child's first name and age. Please submit all questions by January 13, 2010 and look out for the Q & A with Ralph in early February.

The Wee Weekender for October 16-18
Can you believe the weekend is here already? Hooray for short weeks! Here are my picks for the very best, most fun things for your family to do this weekend.
Lycee Francais de Chicago's Fall French Market. Have you ever been to a true French Market before? If not, this is a great opportunity to experience this shopping and sensory extravaganza. Over 60 vendors will be hawking their wares on Saturday and Sunday to raise funds for this wonderful school. Let your kids (ages 3 and up) hang out in the supervised children's pavilion while you browse. Highlights include dancing, music, magic tricks and yoga (all for a fee). Get more details here.
Boo! at the Zoo. This event takes place at the Brookfield Zoo both this weekend and next. Activities include hayrides, corn mazes and a costume parade. Sounds like good Halloween fun to me. Check out the website for all of the details.
Another Free Concert at The Land of Nod. This is the place to be for great free performances this year! On Sunday at 2:00 pm, Peter Himmelman will be performing live. Get there early to find a spot on the rug.
And while this is technically not a child-specific event, I think that your kids would certainly be delighted to attend the Bucktown Apple Pie Contest. Mmmmmmm. Delish. This event takes place from 2:00 until 5:00 on Sunday at Holstein Park.
Coming next week on Wee Windy City: A round-up of Chicago-area Halloween activities (which will in no way be comprehensive because there are at least ten billion events scheduled for the next two weeks). But if you know of a particularly good happening, I'd love to know about it. Email me at weewindycity@gmail.com.

The Wee Weekender for September 12-13
So now that everyone has found their back-to-school groove, I bet that you are looking for a few things to do to chill out on what promises to be a beautiful fall weekend.
If I were you, I would think about one of these options:
The Renegade Craft Fair. Some might argue that the annual Renegade Craft Fair isn't really an event for kids. But I disagree. I think that kids totally belong at this fabulous DIY event. I've brought my kids with me for the past two years. We've had a blast strolling down Division checking out the artist's wares. I've picked up cool items like a hand-knit winter hat for my son and a mermaid shadow puppet for my daughter. This event takes place on September 12 and 13 on Division Street between Damen and Paulina. You should go. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.
Or you could attend the first ever Wake Up and Boogie Down Family Festival Fundraiser sponsored by the Neighborhood Parents Network. If you have early risers (and who among us doesn't), consider supporting a local organization that provides many beneficial services to Chicago families (including their super informational preschool fair). This event kicks off at 9:00 am sharp. Little Miss Ann is performing and kids can make a craft with folks from The Easel. Sounds like a fun morning to me. As an added bonus, you get five complimentary issues of Time Out Chicago Kids (which is jam-packed with kid-friendly stuff you are going to want to know about) with your ticket purchase.
Kilbourn Park Harvest Fest 2009. In case you need another reminder that summer is officially over, take the kiddos over to Kilbourn Park to celebrate summer's bounty.
The Dream Tree Shakers in concert at the Old Town School of Music. On Sunday September 13, bring the whole gang to hear live music. According to the website, this group "will twist and shake like leaves and trees as they sing and play original songs full of the stories of the forest." The concert kicks off at 11:00 am. See the website for details.
Happy weekending to you all -- and then it is back to the school grind first thing Monday.

The Wee Weekender for August 21-23
Looking for something out-of-the ordinary to do with the kiddos this weekend? Here are a few good bets -- and each activity is totally free.
See Little Miss Ann in concert at the Land of Nod. Stop by the Land of Nod store at North and Clybourn for a free concert on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Little Miss Ann puts on a cute show that the kiddies will love. And good luck trying to get out of Land of Nod without actually buying anything.

The Wee Weekender for August 14-16
Still looking for something to do with the kiddos this weekend? I've got a few ideas for you.
The Chicago Air and Water Show. I don't mean to be a grump, but I would skip this one because of the crowd issues -- unless you take my advice and go on Friday.
Green Music Fest. This is a new family-oriented event on the Chicago summer festival scene. Sponsored by the West Town Chicago Chamber of Commerce, this fest promises live music and green vendors and services. The event takes places on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16 at Eckhart Park (1330 West Chicago Avenue). Kid's activities include yoga, gardening, a musical petting zoo and a used book swap. Check out the official website for more details.

Let your kid rock out at Kidzapalooza
Many parents probably think that Lollapalooza isn't the most family friendly destination (think huge crowds, people on various mind-altering substances, extremely loud music, etc.).
Well, Perry Farrell says otherwise. The Lollapalooza festival in town this weekend actually has a huge line up of family friendly activities and performers -- it is called Kidzapalooza. The organizers really want you to bring your kids down to Grant Park to rock out with you at the festival. Seriously.
The mission statement for Kidzapalooza says it all:
