Canada's Gail Shea takes pie to the face

I’m a recent grad school grad, blogger (obviously) and an animal lover extraordinaire. I like writing, friends, family, nature, spinning, cooking and living the dream.

On Monday Jan. 25, Canada's Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea was hit with a pie in the face at an event in Burlington, Ont. Shea stepped up to the podium and began addressing the crowd when a woman stood up, walked toward the podium and put a pie smack dab in Shea's face.

The woman then yelled "Shame on you, Gail Shea," and went on to say "Shame on you Canada, it is a shame that she has not denounced the bloody seal hunt" while pointing to Shea. The woman was escorted away quickly and was being held in custody on Monday.

The video is real funny. Especially when Shea goes "Oh!" after the pie has hit her face. I personally watched it about three times. Here is a link to the story by CBC News; the video is in the upper right hand corner.

If you are not familiar with the Canadian seal hunt you can read more about it here and here. Essentially seals, including cubs that are just around 12 days old are being killed, legally in Canada, mostly for their fur. According to the Humane Society of the United States with more than 1 million baby seals killed in the past five years alone, Canada's commercial seal kill is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth.

The annual slaughter of seals is an off-season activity conducted by commercial fishermen, by banning Canadian seafood it sends a message to Canadian fishermen saying you will not purchase or eat the seafood until the seal hunt is stopped. I personally have two (yes two) stickers on my car that say "Save a Seal, Ban Canadian Seafood" so if you see me driving beep and give a thumbs up!

PETA protest Canada's annual seal hunt in Washington
Members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), some dressed as seals held a protest in front of the Canadian Embassy calling for an end to Canada's annual seal hunt, in Washington on September 16, 2009.

Although Shea said the pie tasted like shaving cream, the pie was suspected to be made of tofu. A tofu cream pie. I have to admit that doesn't sound great but with enough sugar and vanilla added, I'm sure it's delicious. Here is a recipe to a tofu chocolate pie that I know tastes good and is gelatin free!

  • 1 pack silken tofu
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon cider vinegar

   1. Start by blending the tofu in a food processor or with an electric mixer.
   2. Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth and all ingredients are mixed in.
   3. Pour the mixture into a pie crust and smooth out.
   4. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours before serving.

This can also be eaten without the pie crust as a sort of chocolate mousse.

Do your part to save a seal, and remember club sandwiches, not seals!
