Leave Williams, trade HESTER while he has some value. He's not a #1, closer to a #3. He's not returning kick-offs, and his punt returning has been average at best. We can get a high draft pick for him.

Moving Hester would really make no sense. He makes too much muoney and we would have to give him away for basically nothing. He's far too electric of a player to do that...Instead, the new coach will put him back to doing what he does best, and he will "return" to form...(lame pun intended) Remember, he bascially dictated field position for us when he was at his best...there is no reason to think he cant do it again, he's still a very YOUNG player.

In that case, it's essential we make Hester understand he is more valuable to this team as a returner than as a receiver.

To do that, you'll need a coach with a commanding presence and enough street cred in this league to erase any doubts Hester may have.

Luckily enough, there are a few out there who I think could do just that.

I pretty much agree, except on Chris Williams, the jury is still out and on Hester, he needs to be primarily a return guy/slot/3rd receiver.

As for Urlacher, while he has declined due to age and injury, it is pretty clear he doesn't fit in the outdated defensive scheme the Bears run. Under Greg Blache's scheme with two huge defensive tackles, Urlacher was free to search and destroy. The failure of the 1 gap/cover 2 scheme is a bigger indictment of Lovie and Jerry: it does not work in this league any more.

Agreed.

Lovie Smith's failure to acknowledge the fact that his defensive scheme is no longer applicable to the talent he has on this team is just one more reason why he needs to be replaced.

My list varies abit from yours, although I think yours is intriguing. I would let go-

1) Angelo
2) Lovie
3) Turner
4)Urlacher
5) Adrian Peterson - FA who offers nothing special in the run game, also past his prime

6)Kreutz
7)Pace
8)Rashied Davis - taking up a valuable space where we could bring in an experienced or developing WR. Not nearly the force on ST I thought he was, either
9)Jason McKie - Anthony Adams was brought in to block - enough said
10)Pep Hamilton - we need a QB coach who gets through to Cutler. Not the mentor of Alex Smith.

Talk of getting rid of Hester is just plain dumb. He's the greatest return man, probably of all time. Used correctly in the passing game he's a threat. No way he should be let go for anything less than a high first. Any cheapo dealing of Urlacher is unacceptable also. If he wants to be a locker room cancer, so be it, but you can't let him walk for less than a first either. We have no depth at the position - HH is terrible. Greg Olsen is a thorn we can do without and is young enough to get a first rounder for. He can drop balls and act like a pansy somewhere else ....

How is Hester more valuable as a returner than a receiver? If he is just a returner, that allows the opposition to just punt or kick away from him, which maybe gives you field position, but Hester's most dangerous attribute is when he has the ball in his hands...moving him to a returner would kill him. Instead, the Bears should look to bring in a respectable WR to counter Hester so he can see some good looks in coverage....Additionally, they should get an offensive line worth a crap to protect Cutler so he can hit Hester when open and let him do his thing....Hester is still arguably the most dangerous punt returner in the game, thats why teams dont kick to him directly....get a life Olsen

I'm amazed they gave this Olsen guy a blog. Wow. How would getting rid of Hester make the Chicago Bears better in 2010. This offseason the Bears won't have a draft pick until round 3. A new CBA is unlikely, which will result in a very weak FA class. How then does it make sense to cut arguably your best playmaker on the team. Why not look to add a compliment WR(with size) and of course bring in a new OC with better scheme.

This isn't Madden Football for crying out loud.

These comments are ludicrous...how does dismantling the entire team get them any closer to being a playoff contender in the future? The thought that they should dump guys like Urlacher (6 time Pro-Bowler?), Harris (Pro-Bowler, still young), Williams (Hasn't even had a chance to develop yet), Anderson (Lagging lately, but still dangerous as a pass rusher), and Hester (most dangerous return man, and going to be first Bears 1,000 YD receiver since Booker) is stupid. It doesnt benefit the team...The front office guys aren't going to rebuild this...they can't...they are inept....maybe Angelo needs to leave, and Phillips is a business man, not a football guy, as long as they sell out the stadium week in and week out, he's a safe bet to keep his job...Lovie is a quality coach, that the players love playing for because he doesn't embarrass them in front of a national audience....to think he doesnt get on these guys in the locker room or at Halas Hall is the wrong assumption...you dont get to where he is based on being a nice guy that wins...you gotta get stuff done.

The only ones on the list that I agree with are:

Orlando Pace
Lovie Smith
Ron Turner
Jerry Angelo

Cutting a guy like Brian Urlacher might have made sense for an organization about 5-6 years ago. Back then most teams were cash rich but cap poor. Now that has reserved itself. Most teams have hired the right people and have learned to manage the cap. Combine that with the recession and you have now the oppostive. Alot of teams are cap rich, but cash poor. Anyways, previously, cutting a guy like Urlacher would make sense because of the salary cap savings. But if you are not in cap trouble(2010 will more than likely be uncapped) why cut him if you don't have a better replacement talent wise? Have you seen the middle of our field get tourched this year? Same goes for Mark Anderson. Yes, his rookie year was a fluke, but he was a 5th round pick who can be a decent backup. Bag on him all you want, but at least he is better than Gaines Adams(what an awful trade). So what good does it do to get rid of him, given his salary.

Please, consider the current NFL climate and apply a bit of logic here.

"How is Hester more valuable as a returner than a receiver"

Go back and watch the entire 2006 season. After that, watch every season since then, in which Hester has been a WR.

The results speak for themselves. You CANT tell me he has had more of an impact as a WR than he did as a return man...thats not opinion...look at the results. Only the Bears would take a guy who is the best, possibly ever, at what he does and turn him into something HE HAS NEVER DONE.

Can't argue your point, that being said how does it benefit the Bears to cut him? We spend three years developing him as a WR so he can go to a team like the Colts and put up monster #'s
