The NHL has it right. Upon the retirement of Wayne Gretzky, it was announced that no other player would again wear his number, 99 - and no player has.

Gretzky's success in hockey is easily comparable to Jordan's in basketball - of course, the global and popular culture impact is significantly less, mainly because it's hockey.

Michael Jordan, whom I love, is an arrogant individual that should learn to be a little more humble. The man is so in love with himself he makes me want to puke. Once he apologizes for his stupid, ridiculous, arrogant, speech during his induction to the Hall of Fame, then maybe retire his number. When he dies, I wonder if he will rise from the dead, and renew his basketball career. I have news for Sir Michael. Koby's better.

MLB retired 42 for Jackie Robinson, a man whose efforts transcended sport. He was a person anyone could look up to, even if they didn't like baseball.

The NHL cheapened that honor when they retired Gretzky's 99--a number I doubt any kid would want the pressure of donning in the first place--simply because he was a great player.

If the NBA wants to do the same with 23, that's their problem. I would say I'd stop going if they did it, but cmon, I don't go now.
