The USA men's ice hockey team scrambled to change their Sunday morning departing flights from Vancouver after defeating Finland 6-1. Winning the semifinals on Thursday solidified their advancement to the final game on Sunday against Canada.
According to defenseman Jack Johnson, the NHL scheduled all the USA hockey players to depart Vancouver on Sunday morning so that the players could get ready for their NHL games coming up next week.
"They scheduled the Russians, the Swedish, and everyone else to fly out on Monday," Johnson said. Johnson who plays for the Los Angeles Kings was scheduled to fly to Dallas Monday and join his NHL teammates play the Dallas Stars.
When asked if Johnson would fly directly to Dallas from Vancouver on Monday he said, "We're all up in the air for flight schedules, quite frankly if we win a gold medal we'll walk to wherever we have to go. We're not too worried about it."
Before the Olympic Games began, Hockey General Manager Brian Burke addressed the many critics who second guessed Burke's decision to select such a young team. Burke said he picked this team because they had a lot of soul and he was turning a page.
Both Burke and Head Coach Ron Wilson expressed how they knew that had put together a winning team before the start of the Games. At the very least the USA hockey team will leave Vancouver on Sunday with a Silver medal.
