Good hair?

Cynthia Washington

My goal is to share ALL the knowledge I have obtained over the last nine years about hair, skin and nails with everyone who is "Mane conscious"!

Okay everyone, I need to get something straight here.  I am truly tired of hearing people refer to certain hair types as "Good Hair".

I'm happy to be nappy!

Can someone please tell me:

1.  What constitutes "Good hair"
2.  Who made the decision?
3.  Where was I when the vote was taken?

In my opinion ALL HAIR IS GOOD HAIR.

Good hair is whatever is on your head. God gave us what looks best on us. It's really funny because people (like me) with really fine straight hair would love to have curls, and people with thick curly hair would love to have straight hair. Just be grateful for what you have and take care of it.

Good hair in my opinion is any hair that is HEALTHY! The bottom line is that good hair is healthy hair regardless if it is natural or premed. If your hair is clean and moisturized without split ends and you like that way you look, then you have good hair.

I meant "natural or permed". Sorry - didn't have spell check on my phone!

Good Hair to me, is no split ends, does not frizz or go flat in humid weather. Live in FL so for some that is a problem. Not for me, have poker straight hair.

Well... Good hair is a term that was originated from Afro-American people who believed that their hair was extra course. I was one of those people, but after a period of time I found out the more involved I was with my hair the better it looked. -God blessed us all with good hair.

Good hair is a hairstyle that is out of my face and makes me feel good.

Good Hair is considered good when it stays on your head and doesn't fall out ...

You already know the history of "good hair." You weren't born yet. But I get where you're going with that. I think in today's society, we should be rolling our eyes at the term, but we all know that mainstream society regards "good hair" as straight hair, comb-a-ble hair and usually flowing hair.

Good Hair is well maintained and grows. The ideal that silky or fine hair is good is nothing but scuttlebutt! Lord knows I've seen silky hair that wouldn't grow an inch, thin and broken off....

Good hair is the hair that God gave ya'. I have been chemical free for about seven years. Since it has varied from blond to sandy brown throughout my life that presents it's own challenges. It's mine and it's good. As a little girl, I made the mistake of telling my grandmother who's hair not coarse; but fine with a large wave pattern, that she had good hair and I was instantly set straight.

Hi Cynthia!

I am the person you met at the beauty supply store today – it was wonderful meeting you! Just checking out the site, I'm lovin' what I see so far.

Now to comment on the good hair thing. Let us pray that GOD will please forgive and deliver Black people from despising our own hair. I have no statistical data to back this next comment, but I would dare to say that is usually Black people that disperse the “good hair” judgment when a person is sporting a presumably finer or smoother texture of hair.

I know that we have somewhat of an excuse to self-hate our Black attributes because of the conditioning that still obviously lingers in our DNA stemming from slavery. But it’s been over 300 years – our being ignorant and self-loathing is no longer our birth right. We have a choice to love ourselves – especially the darkest shades of brown and the courses textures of our hair.

The day is coming and I am optimistic that Black people everywhere will resound in a unanimous voice that all of the "grades" of our hair specifically course hair is beautiful, desirable, and good.

Hey Yolanda! I'm so glad you commented on this post. We have a lot of work to do...I saw Chris Rock's movie last night and I am still shaking my head in disbelief at the deep dark ignorance among people of color. Stop by and let me know me how you like the Organic ROOT Stimulator Lock & Twist Gel I love this stuff!

Thanks,

Cynthia
