Lesbians with shear talent

The L-Blog is a blog for and about lesbian and bisexual women in Chicagoland, written by Trish Bendix, blog editor and writer for AfterEllen.com. TLB will feature events, people and commentary on queer life and culture in the city.

Sometimes you need to go to a lesbian to get something done right, and that includes getting an amazing gay haircut. If you're constantly in search of a stylist who can understand what you're looking for (post-break-up new 'do, a butcher cut to show off your masculine side, or, perhaps, a chic style for a new season), there are definitely a few queer women in the city who are a cut above the rest.

Angela at Twisted Scissors (2001 N. Point St.)

One of three owners at this punk rock hair studio, Angela has some business savvy as well as great hands. Some added bonuses: Twisted Scissors is completely affordable at $20 a haircut, and they offer cans of beer to customers.

Brenna at Black Hearts Hair House (3535 N. Lincoln Ave.)

A new Lakeview salon with a goth-rockabilly theme, Black Hearts is home to a lesbian stylist who professes to have perfected short 'dos. Make sure to check out the photo booth when you're done in her chair.

Carrie at Sine Qua Non (3417 N. Lincoln Ave.)

The bisexual stylist is also a member of local band, The Dirtbox Racers, so half of her ability is fusing her rock sensibility with the mod chicness that is Sine Qua Non. Make sure to book your appointment weeks in advance, as Carrie's a hard one to get in with.

Erin at Milios (959 W. Belmont Ave)

Also a member of The Chicago Oufit roller derby team, Erin may look a little tough, but don't let that scare you out of her station. She is also a great hand at short 'dos, like the one she sports herself.

I've been going to Carrie for YEARS and she is the absolute best...especially for short cuts. She is so great.
