I admit, I've never been big into baseball or riding the red line on game day, but now I have good reason to support one of the city's home teams: A lesbian is part owner.
One Lesbian Reason... to support the Cubs
An entire family, The Ricketts, have purchased the Chicago Cubs for $845 million dollars. Among the father and sons is out daughter, Laura, who is a Southside resident and founder of Ecotravel, a nature-friendly travel company.
Not only is Laura Ricketts a lesbian, but she serves on the board of directors of Lambda Legal and campaigns heavily for marriage rights. In fact, she and her partner, Heidi, are marrying in 2013. She's also a huge donor to LGBT organizations like the Howard Brown Health Center and Center on Halsted.
If that's not reason enough to buy a bleacher seat to a Cubs game, I don't know what is.

i was thinking this is another reason NOT to buy a bleacher seat to a Cubs game.
i don't want my $$$ ending up helping causes i oppose such as same-sex marriage.

Well, sir, you've come to the wrong blog. I am pretty sure the Cubs do not need another fan like you.

Lesbian, gay, straight, whatever....just win the World Series.
And why are they waiting to 2013? Waiting for the next election to come and go?

Who gives two hoots in hell if she's lesbian or straight. This is news?

Did you "accidentally" land on the L-Blog or something?

When I saw this story, I was afraid there might be some comments like gordo's - but I didn't expect it to be the first one. At least it wasn't hateful.
By gordo's "logic" I should have stopped going to Cubs games when the Tribune bought the team, because they usually endorse Republican politicians and my money would end up going to support a cause I oppose.
That said, I'm not sure the fact that a lesbian is part of the ownership clan is reason enough to buy a ticket if you weren't going to anyway. After all, every family has gay men or lesbians on one branch or another - although there was that one politician from Texas (or maybe Oklahoma) who claimed otherwise.
Still, I think this is great news. Anything showing that gays and lesbians are just part of regular families doing regular things - even wealthy families owning sports teams - is a good thing.
I see that Laura and Heidi aren't marrying for 4 more years. That's a pretty long engagement ... I wonder if they know something about the prospects for marriage equality in Illinois.
I look forward to seeing you on the Red line on game day, Trish.

I was a a Cub Fan. Now I think I will be a Milwaukee fan instead. Way too long waiting for the Cubs to win, and now the Cubs will be owned by Lesbian's.

Trish - thanks for this superb update. Now I have one more reason to root for the cubbies vs the white sox.
