The Green Mama Eats: Find Fresh Veggies in the Heart of Chicago
Topping The Green Mama's list of ways that families can go greener, eat healthy and save money is joining a CSA. CSAs, Community Supported Agriculture, are farms where consumers buy a share of the farm's yield for the season. Typically you pay at the beginning of the growing season for a weekly box of fresh produce delivered to the city. At $15 to $30 for enough produce to feed your family for a week, CSA's are a great bargain.
It's not too late to sign up for the 2010 season. And if you think working downtown means you don't have time to eat local organic food, think again! City Farm has added a produce pick-up at the Thompson Center (Tuesday afternoons from 4:30 - 5:30 - all summer you could be heading home with a box of super fresh, delicious produce!!) Sign up now till Memorial Day (checks needed by May 31st). Sign up through email (cityfarmchicago@gmail.com) or in person, any day this week from noon to 1 pm at the City Farm table at Thompson Center. Another City Farm CSA pick-up is at the farm itself at Clyborn and Division.
Eating locally has never been easier for folks living and working in the Chicago region (or at least not since the Industrial Revolution and globalization of the food supply chain). Visit www.familyfarmed.org to find a CSA near you. Another great way to save money while eating greener, healthier and more locally is to shop at farmer's markets - visit the City of Chicago website for a listing of farmer's markets. City Farm has supported sustainable agriculture and offered green employment and education opportunities for almost 10 years, stop by and see what it's all about.

The Chicago Tribune had a great list of the area markets in 2009, many of these are running again in 2010 (check before heading out with your reusable bag and cash dollars).
