Earth Day always feels a bit like an environmentalist's New Year celebration to me. It is a chance to reflect on the year's past green successes and look ahead to new year of opportunity and positive change.

In the spring, I feel full of renewed excitement and connection to the living world, almost pregnant with eco-passion. It is a time for families to come outside, to play in the sun and soil. At The Green Mama we work with to grow greener families, helping them to incorporate fun and easy green practices into their homes and lives. We teach classes, consult with individuals and small businesses, and work to support communities of engaged parents who are interested in the health of their families and the health of the planet.

Something I often hear is, "We wish we heard about greener living before we had kids or when we were pregnant." Because our choices for food, products, and daily behaviors can have a big impact on ecological health and personal wellness, and because you asked for it, we are now offering classes for expectant parents. We'll focus on what goes on, goes in and is around our bodies before and during pregnancy. These classes will go beyond the basics and dive into the myths, marketing and ways to save money.

The Green Mama will be celebrating Earth Day weekend at Bellybum Boutique with a Green Pregnancy 101 session from 12 - 3pm. Also at Bellybum in May is a Going Green for Me and Baby-To-Be workshop (May 10th, 17th and 24th 6 - 7:30pm). If you are an expectant parent, preparing to adopt, or trying to conceive, this workshop is for you... all welcome! Call Bellybum Boutique for details and registration at (773) 868-0944.

Tips for expectant parents:
- Look for body care products without parabens, synthetic fragrances, or dyes,  as chemicals can absorb into our bodies and impact baby. Next steps, skip any ingredients you don't know or cannot pronounce! Check out EWG's Cosmetic Database to see how your favorites rank.

 - Due to paint, furniture, and decorating, a newly created nursery can be a dangerous place for new babies. Dramatically improve indoor air quality by choosing zero-VOC paint, formaldehyde-free furniture and open a window!
