You Don't Have to be on TV to Learn These 4 Tips for Greening Your Home
Tune in and see Stephen Brooks, the host of
Save My Planet, interview The Green Mama, LLC owner and green guru Manda Aufochs Gillespie as she visits the home of
Chapter One Organics' Jennifer Murphy.
We at the Green Mama encourage families to make small changes, one step at a time. The key is to have patience with yourself and not to get overwhelmed by trying to change everything all at once. Starting with simple steps that you find interesting is a great way to have fun with the process. To help, here are 4 simple steps that can save money, save your health and help save the planet!

1. Use baking soda and vinegar instead of expensive all-purpose cleaners. Simple and safe ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, lemons, salt and tea tree oil can be used for cleaning kitchens, bathrooms, and even on floors. Switching to non-toxic, homemade cleansers can save you more than a hundred dollars each year!
2. Use a programmable thermostat to save energy & money. This can save you more than $200 per year!
3. Look at your labels. Many beauty care products in the US have unsafe and unnecessary ingredients in them. Learn what’s in your products by reading the ingredient list and using resources like EWG’s Skin Deep database to check them out. One of my favorite DIY ingredients is olive oil – delicious for cooking and nourishing on skin – try a few drops after your next shower.
4. Avoid exposure to VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) off-gassing in your home by looking for products that do not contain harsh chemicals like formaldehyde, chemical flame-retardants, and certain varnishes and sealants (commonly found in many furniture items, paints, adhesives, and carpeting). Another great way to improve your indoor air quality for free is to simply crack your windows open!
