If the roads are clear & dry,
Why not give winter biking a try!
Don't let winter keep you inside,
bundle up and take a bike ride!
Make sure you wear all the proper gear,
like a glove for each hand and muffs for each ear.
Avoid inclement days or extra dark nights.
Go slow when you must and wear lots of lights.
It's good for your body and great for your spirit.
When naysayers nay just pretend you don't hear it.
Don't hibernate or mope this cold winter season,
There is plenty to do that you will find pleasin'.
Wearing warm clothes and waiting til the street dries,
will soothe your winter blues and give you exercise!
I'm happy to report I'm back on my bike, at least until the next snowy or sleeting day. During the winter we all spend more time indoors, and I'm getting a wee bit stir-crazy staying inside.

Seriously, riding in the winter can be invigorating, a great way to get around, and easier than you think. Chicago's Active Transportation Alliance provides tips, tools and education events for people looking to learn more. Check out their winter cycling workshops happening around town.
You can gear up to bike, or bike with what you already have. I've found great winter biking gear at local thrift stores; a bright red windbreaker, heavy warm gloves and wool sweaters I don't mind getting a little sweaty. Another great way to ride without investing a chunk of change is to learn some simple bike maintenance and keep your ride in tip top shape (especially in winter - take it from someone who is learning the hard way).
The Recyclery is a non-profit used bike collective, located at 7628 N. Paulina. They offer classes, accept bike donations and are building a lot of great community involvement.
Dutch bikes are now available in the US! These bikes make it comfortable to transport you and your children, even in snow and rain. Mention "The Green Mama" for $200 in service. Hear more about
Manda's experiences and adventures on her dutch bike.
Happy pedaling!!
