Community Support in Action - A Call to Keep Evanston Ecology Center Open
The Evanston Ecology Center at the Ladd Arboretum has been providing education, green space and community gardens for over 30 years. They have done so with the help and support of the Evanston Environmental Association and the City of Evanston, not to mention hundreds of volunteers. I n the face of budgetary concerns, the Evanston City Council is considering cutting back or even shutting down the center (and the Evanston branch libraries - but that is the subject for another story!)

Places like the Ecology Center are needed even more when times are tight.Where can you go to attend lectures on safer lawn care, workshops on bird watching, play groups for green focused parents, conservation theme summer camps, kid's campfire nights, small fry science programs, or toddler story time. This urban refuge cares for kids, adults, community groups, and a small, much loved collection of tortoises, reptiles and bunnies.
As of today it seems the public outcry over the proposal to close the Ecology Center may keep the center open, I for one hope it stays this way. And I wish they could get more funding for their work, not less!
