Silly Bandz: taking over wrists everywhere

The Deep Dish

20 something recent Chicago transplant trying to find my healthy way in the deep dish capital of the world

I was first introduced to the mysterious "Silly Band" a few months ago.  At the time I had no concept of the Silly Band fad that had taken over the wrists of people everywhere.  It made sense for the kids.  There's always a current trend.  When I was young it was mostly Beanie Babies for me.  And the pog.  Who can forget pogs?  Maybe this was just an influence of having two brothers?  Who knows.

Now I'm one not to be up with the current fads.  I tend to operate on a 6 month lag.  Probably why I'm still wearing "jorts" when most people are pointing and laughing at me.  I'm fine with it.  I get everything on sale, suckers!

For once I think I jumped on this band wagon in time.  On their website, Silly Bandz are described as "the fun-shaped, multi-colored rubber bands that are wildly popular among children of all ages" (http://sillybandz.com/blog/).  I tend to disagree.  These aren't only wildly popular among children.  Just the other day my friend Kyle, who believe me may act childish from time to time but is in fact a full grown man, tweeted that he had just purchased Silly Bandz on eBay.  I was saved from a boring airport bar experience by my own Silly Bandz, which were gifted to me by my cousin Julia last week.  I was minding my own business and avoiding eye contact, when the man next to me asked which Silly Bandz I had.  I proudly lined up my tye-dyed boot, cat, and elephant, and we thus continued to have a more adult conversation.

Okay, he remarked that his 11 year old daughter also had the boot, but whatever, she must be cool.

This post has nothing to do with Chicago or really anything, but these Silly Bandz just amaze me.  They must be making a fortune on their flimsy, rubbery, kookily shaped toy.  I must say, not only do they make quite the fashion statement, but also double for emergency hair bands and cat entertainment.   Quite the investment, if you ask me.

There are millions of these now. I suggest a recon of Bandz Wiki if you want to get a sense of where this came from and how big its getting.

I feel it needs to be known that the Silly Bandz I purchases are for my 4 year old nephew. That said, I will be keeping one of the bands that is in the shape of the Phillie Phanatic.
