I love older towns with quaint downtown areas. I'm also a big proponent of supporting local businesses as opposed to major corporations whenever possible.
With that in mind, my husband and I headed to downtown Lockport when we suddenly found ourselves kid-free on July 5th (thank you Grandma!).
First, the bad news. The downtown area is quite depressed. There are several vacant storefronts. In fact, there was one that was so dirty and disgusting looking that I almost felt compelled to call the Realtor to tell him to at least clean up the debris and garbage littering the front display windows. Ever hear of curb appeal?
There weren't many people out and about on what was for many, a day off from work, but it was 90+ degrees outside. The good news is we discovered a few pretty great local places and felt good about supporting local business.

Welcome To Suburban Soapbox!
I intend to write about local area events and topics associated with kids and parenting, for the most part. I have many other interests, as I'm sure you do too, so may veer slightly off topic from time to time. I may digress as this blog evolves.
About your humble blogger: I grew up in the southwest suburbs and have lived in Romeoville for 10 years with my husband and two kids. I recently turned forty (that was painful to type). My kids attend school in the Plainfield school district. I love finding new and exciting local businesses, events and hearing about different issues related to kids and parenting.
I'm looking forward to meeting other local parents through this blog and I encourage comments, constructive criticism and respectful, intelligent debate. Have a topic you'd like covered? An interesting event coming up? A parenting question or suggestion? Hit me up. I want to hear from you.
Welcome and stay tuned!
