Fantasy Baseball Draft Day: The Greatest Day Ever

Everyone in the league looks EXACTLY like this.

Sunday is my favorite day of the year. It's my fantasy baseball draft.

This is our 8th year (of which I've won 1.5 times...I tied once) and no matter how long you've done it, it's still exciting. These players are going to become almost a part of your family for the next six months. It's a big deal. Last year I Skyped in from London to do the draft. There are few things I'd miss it for.

We do an AL-Only league, which is really the only way to go if you actually care about baseball (I suppose NL-Only is fine too). I love how in-depth you have to go with your knowledge, it's to the point where you pretty much know every player in the league and care about nearly every game that night. I find myself rooting for the best outcomes for my players when they play my real team. If they hit a two-run homer to make the score 9-2, I'm for it. There's probably something wrong with me, but fantasy makes you feel like you are a part of the game.

When one of your players does something bad, you expect to get a text from someone else in the league about it. The worst is if you are actually at the game and your pitcher gets rocked. I'm not really sure what the female equivalent is to the bond I get to fantasy baseball (95% of girls have no idea how it works). Although, I really don't understand girls at all (namely how they don't ALL want to play fantasy baseball).

Guys like Shaun Marcum and Rajai Davis not only play in the league, but are two of my absolute favorite players in the game today. Finding a guy under the radar and having them do well for you is one of the greatest parts of sports. Aaron Hill was that guy for me last year. I would be lying if I said I didn't consider getting a Hill t-shirt. I think fantasy sports is how 'man crush' was invented. I don't think I actually 'love' and of my players. But it's not far off, especially considering the number of hours I spend with the players during they year.

In our league we don't use a website like ESPN or Yahoo to run our league, which makes us either old school or stupid. Or just awesome. We make the commissioner "do the file" every week, which means he pulls all the stats himself and send out an Excel file with the updated stats. There are few things in life more fun than yelling at him to do the file. He goes to Michigan Law School, it's not like he really has anything else to do (no one really likes him anyways). This also let's us invent things like the Aaron Boone Rule and create position eligibility for minor leaguers. Nerdy. But awesome.

Sure, I play in one of the nerdiest leagues in the world (which makes it hard to find more people to join) but I wouldn't really want it any other way.

I'm kind of a loser.

UPDATE: See how the draft went here.
