Helping Pets in Haiti, Photo Gallery Seen Here First
Never before seen photos (in gallery here), rescuing animals in Haiti,
American Humane Association and the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti. Tracy Reis of American Humane is in Haiti, and Dr. Ian Robinson of the International Fund for Animal Welfare
describe conditions in Port-au-Prince.

About 20 animal welfare groups are in Haiti, some groups sending representives rotating out while other groups sending animal rescuers into the country.
Here's the 'tent city' where rescuers/responders from the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti and others pack it in at night. I included this photo because I thought it would interesting for you to see what life is like there. Now, where Anderson Cooper is staying, I don't know. But probably a similar set up. Tracy told me it's dangerous for most repsonders (those helping animals or children) to be out at night, and there is a curfew.
Many animals were sparred where people were not. Here's why: Dogs and cats are mostly not kept as indoor pets; they're on the street. Well, it turns out the street is the safest place to be in an earthquake, or at least a lot safer than inside a building about to collapse.
Some dogs, puppies did need rescuing. Also, help is needed for livestock.
Some dogs do need to be caught...for many that is easier said than done because they're not accustomed to people touching, or petting them.
Dogs are mostly outdoor community dogs in Haiti, they're sometimes even named and sometimes supplimented with food...but rarely kept inside. Cats are mostly another story, they greatly serve as mousers and ratters. Some noted despite this 'distance' in Haiti between people and pets (as we call dogs and cats pets), there was a great amount of effort to save animals too. Says something about the big hearts of Hatians, I think.

Steve - HSUS is doing a lot of fund raising around this crisis - as they do around every crisis - but, of course, I don't see them here in the pictures or article. I don't trust HSUS on the whole. Those commercials they are running lately just distress people even as Wayne Pacelle continues to self promote. Have you heard anything about them doing any actual work in Haiti? Or are they just raising money...?

I can't say what the HSUS is doing, or not doing...but as they often do - they refused to be a part of the coalition.

Notice the photos are all credited to Jeff Eyre, ASPCA. I thought he was the Director of HSUS's Disaster Response Team--did he get a new gig?
Steve Dale said:
apparently, Eden....I don't know.
I don't know Jeff. I do know many good people had left HSUS

the post isn't about the HSUS, by the way...it's about what some individuals and groups ARE doing in Haiti
