Dr. Sheldon Rubin Honored by the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association
Dr. Rubin Retires! It really is a headline. Chicago will never be the same - our pets won't anyway...You may know him as Oprah's one-time veterinarian; a frequent guest on Wally Phillips' (back in the day) or the veterinarian to be a guest most often
on my shows; or as president of the
American Heartworm Society (ok, you may not know him from that). He's earned many awards and honors, and on December 9 he was honored by the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association for a lifetime of Distinguished Service. We may not have had James Herriot in Chicago; we did better for 41 year - we had Shelly Rubin.I was presented with the CVMA President's Award:

Dr. Nir noted the legislative initiatives Dr. Rubin has campaigned both for and against over the years, and how his involvement has made a difference for pets in Illinois.
Dr. Rubin encourages other veterinarians to 'get involved!' Prior to Dr. Rubin's award 12 veterinarians were honored with CVMA Lifetime Membership awards, including ex Chicago Cub Dr. Richard Nye (a longtime friend); Dr. Terry Becker, Dr. Roy Hubert, Dr. Richard Kilburn, Dr. Craig Kragness, Dr. Terrence Locke, Dr. John MacLellan, Dr. Jerold Needelman, Dr. Ray Norlin, Dr. Mohammad Rahman, Dr. Bala Rengarajan and Dr. Thomas Welsh
Dr. Nir presented me with the 2009 President's Service Award. It really was very nice, and I thanked the CVMA for the honor. I noted that threat of mandatory spay/neuter may return, and how Dr. Rubin played a significant role. Also, I pointed out what a loss it is for veterinary medicine that Dr. Rubin is retiring! Cats and dogs will be upset - but not our Ethel, who will always have her own Dr. Rubin
Miss Meowsky, of Barker and Meowsky, named this dog toy for Dr. Rubin, Sheldon the Squirrel. That is a singular honor! I tell our dog Ethel, to 'sit/stay' in one place. In another place, I hide Dr. Rubin (the toy). And then I say, 'Go find Dr. Rubin!!!' She does it - and loves her Dr. Rubin! As long as his stuffing holds, she will always have a Dr. Rubin to play with. See video of Ethel finding Dr. Rubin: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Steve-Dale/50057343596?ref=ts
With Dr. Nir is Paulette Rubin, my wife's sister, shopping partner. Truly with all the good I've been able to do at WGN and now at WLS - my personal highlight, our friendship with the Rubins.
With Robin, who Dr. Nir says is beautiful, not only is a fine veterinarian, but he has fine taste...no doubt this is how he got to be President
If you love Pit Bulls, you may be crediting me for putting the skids on attempted breed bans...but behind the scenes, Dr. Shannon Greeley worked tirelessly. She's played a key role in our Task Force on Companion Animals and Pulblic Safety, and with Dr. Kathleen Heneghan the CVMA presented her with a 2009 Merit Award. Both are ex-Presidents of the CVMA

I like to think of Dr. Rubin as Filbert and Shadow's doctor! Dr. Rubin cared for our dogs for 14 years. He is one of the most caring, dedicated and skilled people I have ever met. I feel fortunate that my dogs were his patients (us too!).

Dr Rubin deserves all the praise he can tolerate!!! Thank you for being the standard bearer for pet care in the Chicago-land area and making a difference in the state as well. Thank you ALSO for publicly stressing that my decisions made regarding my pet's health are to be made between me and my vet. Thank you a million times over. And also congratulations on 'Sheldon the Squirrel ' dog toy that was named after you!!
