Brain tumor risks increase with cell phone use
The evidence is in...Cell phones aren't as safe as you thought they were. So why are we just starting to hear about this now?
I have always been hyper-sensitive to this topic since my father, Tim Weigel, died of a brain tumor in 2001. He was only 56 years old, and he was ALWAYS on his cell phone. I felt there was a connection to the tumors and his cell phone use immediately, but at the time, there was little evidence to support this hunch. It just didn't seem okay to me that there are pants that come with "cell phone" lining to avoid damaging your thighs, yet it's okay to press those phones up against your brains?!
Yesterday, I found a story on mercola.com that proves my hunch was correct. According to Ronald B. Herberman, M.D. Director Emeritus of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, cell phone radiation "can damage DNA and increase the risk of brain tumors."
Most at risk? Children. Especially if they are under five, because their skulls are not fully developed. Even if you're on the cell phone and they are close to you, you are exposing them to dangerous radiation.
And as if the brain tumor threat wasn't bad enough, the article also says cell phone radiation can increase your risk of eye cancer, salivary gland tumors, testicular cancer, Non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and leukemia.
I sat on an airplane next to a man who knew an awful lot about cell phone technology a few years ago. He wouldn't tell me exactly what position he held, but he worked with several scientists, some of them from NASA. We got into a lengthy discussion about how he retired to a holistic community in Fairfield Iowa after years of burning the candle at both ends. And then he said something to me that I'll never forget.
"If you love your family and want to see them live a long life, you won't let them use cell phones. If you must use them, put them on speaker phone and keep them at least one foot away from your head."
I didn't need a stranger on an airplane to tell me what I was already thinking.
Now I always tell people to listen to their instincts. I call it my "gut check". My gut has always told me that the cell phone industry is going to follow the same path as the tobacco giants. Research will slowly be made public about how deadly they are, and lawsuits will reign supreme. It's unfortunate, but that's how our country seems to operate....keep the risks quiet long enough for a handful of people to get really rich, and then apologize later only if you get caught.
So if you use your cell phone several hours a week, you may want to scale back and try that speaker option. And if you have a child- please don't let them put a cell phone to their ear for more than one minute to say "I'll be home soon." If they fight you on it, tell them it's just as deadly as smoking cigarettes.
After all, it's only a matter of time before we'll be seeing one of the heads of these communication companies holding up his right hand in a court of law, swearing to "tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you God.."
