I'm Spiritual, Dammit

Is bottled water pure? Trust the intention.

There has been a lot of talk lately about the purity of your bottled water.  Labels are vague, and it's likely that the "spring" water you downed at lunch was created in a plant with fewer quality restrictions than the water flowing freely from your tap.

Glass of Mineral Water
So what's a water drinker to do?  You can buy the top brands-  Evian or Fiji seem to have good track records and purity ratings. But after discovering that 80 percent of the bottles thrown in the trash wind up in land fills, I have been reluctant to stock up.

Just today I was reading an article out of Australia that said the state government has announced an immediate ban on all departments and agencies buying bottled water- and this includes all water coolers.  Apparently- they spent 500 million bucks on water bottles last year in Australia- and now they're thinking about launching a public information campaign that will shed light on the high cost and environmental risks of choosing the bottle over the tap.

And to make things even MORE complicated- now there is Water With Intention.  Huh?  That's right- bottled water with Positive Themed Labels- and when it's packaged, they claim to infuse the water with "love", "joy" and "perfect health".  It's called H20m Water- A friend sent me an article about it from Time Magazine (so you know it's legit, right?)

I'm a big believer in energy and positive intentions.  I've even done my own version of the Japanese Water Experiments made famous by the movie "What the Bleep"- showing that our intention can actually change the shape of water molecules when viewed under a microscope; positive thoughts create molecules shaped like snowflakes, and negative thoughts produced messy clusters.  I produced a video where I think positive thoughts into a vase full of flowers to see if they live longer. (The results seem pretty obvious to me, but see for yourself.)

This "happy" water sounds pretty cool- but how can we be sure that ALL the water made from the folks at H20m is infused with joy and love?  While their website boasts that the water comes from a natural spring source in the San Diego Mountains, what if a guy on the bottling line was having a crappy day?  If his anger leaks into his hands as he handles the water, how would we know?!  I'd want my money back!!

The laundry list of accolades for the h20m water's taste is pretty impressive;  Winner of the 19th annual Berkeley Springs Water Tasting Competition Gold Medal, or the esteemed Best Tasting Water In the World Award for 2009- (okay- I want to know who judges THAT
contest?!) The only water taste test I've ever heard about took place in Evanston last summer.  A group of Evanstonians decided to hold a water taste test where several local suburbs lined up their waters (including some bottled waters) to see which one had the highest marks  The winner?  Evanston's tap water- and by a long shot.

So why don't I drink it?  I was trying to pin point the exact reason why- and could only remember being afraid that it was dirty.  With all these horror stories of tainted tap water over the years, the news made me scared to trust my own water source.  That "crisp" and "clear" description on the bottle just seemed like it was supposed to be better for me.  But now I know that just because a bottle says the water is "refreshing"- that doesn't mean it's "clean".

So what to do?  I think for now, I'm going to take a little from column A, and a little from column B.  First- I'm going to buy one of those pitcher filters and I'm going to fill it with my tap water.  And then before I drink every glass, I'm going to try to infuse it with as much "love", "joy", and "perfect health" as I can muster.  I did this for my video with the flowers in the vase- so why not try to do this for the water going into my body?

The only hitch will be if I'm having a shitty day.  I have a hard time thinking positive when I want to run over someone with a car. So if that's the case, I won't be drinking water.  More likely- a martini...
