Bobby Jenks: Weight Not the Issue

If you're a major league pitcher, and fat, than any sort of drop in performance will be attributed at some point, by someone, to your weight. That's what White Sox closer Bobby Jenks thinks. Talking with MLB.com, Jenks responded to comments by Ozzie Guillen about Jenks weight. Jenks said, "for four years now, I've been the same guy, and when I slow down a little ... Bad things happen to anyone, not because I need to get into shape. This has been me the whole time, so where is the problem?"
Jenks is right. The Sox had no problem with his size in 2005, when Jenks became the number one weapon out of the pen. Guillen even playfully joked about Jenks' size with every trip to the mound to bring the rookie in. His weight wasn't considered a problem then, and if Jenks was still throwing like he was back then, it wouldn't be considered a problem now. But that's how it goes for guys like Jenks.

That's not to say Jenks doesn't have a problem. It's a lot easier to deal with extra pounds in your mid 20s, but Jenks will be 29 in March and has had recurring back problem the past two years. Back problems and an expanding gut don't mix.

He's actually had all sorts of nagging injuries, from weird back issues to a calf problem to rib cage problems. Those type of nagging injuries tend to happen to people who aren't in shape, particularly as they age. Hopefully the White Sox are able to get this across to Jenks.
