Colon to Rotation; Richard to Pen; Fields to AAA

Joe Cowley is reporting that the White Sox will make room for newly acquired 1B/OF Mark Kotsay on the 25 man roster by sending 1B/3B Josh Fields to AAA Charlotte. The move won't be made official until Wednesday, which is when Kotsay is expected in the Sox dugout. The Sox have also announced the lefty Clayton Richard will be sent to the bullpen with Bartolo Colon replacing him as the 5th starter.

SN's Take:

• Expect Josh Fields to be traded in the coming days (if not sooner). GM Ken Williams met with Fields earlier in the season regarding his future in the organization and again today regarding tomorrow's demotion. Fields trade value is at an all-time low, but he's still a former 1st round pick whose two years removed from a 20+ HR season at the major league level. The name that gets thrown around a bit is Felix Pie and the Orioles have expressed interest in Josh Fields in the past. Pie is a CFer and former top prospect who has now flamed out of two organizations (Cubs & Orioles), but still possesses the tools that scouts love. I hope the Sox go another route, but the organization has always had a knack for picking up those "change of scenery" guys (see Gavin Floyd, Bobby Jenks, Esteban Loazia, Jose Contreras, and Matt Thornton) so in Kenny I trust.

• Clayton Richard's stay in the bullpen should be short-lived. Richard didn't deserve a demotion (see his most recent 2 starts), but the Sox needed a lefty in the pen for a couple games while Thornton attends the birth of his child. That doesn't mean Richard is assured of joining the rotation, but if the Sox don't acquire another starter (potentially with Richard as the bait), Richard should move back to the rotation. The most likely, non Richard trade scenario, would involve the Sox acquiring a lefty reliever (which they have targeted) and moving Richard back to the rotation. In no, way, shape or form should Bartolo Colon and his mid 80's fastball make more than one start.

Sucks for Clayton.

As long as it is a temporary move I don't feel too bad for Clayton. He's pitched his butt off though and has a lot better stuff and is better suited for the rotation than Colon.

If the Sox don't make a trade I expect Clayton to move back to the rotation, unless the below happens:

- Sox acquire a starter (with Richard or without), thus Richard is needed in the pen

* If no moves are made and Colon stays in the rotation, you'll see a future story from me talking about how Richard should be in the rotation (over Colon).

It sounds as if Thornton will be back tomorrow. If thats the case than I really am not a fan of those move. Clayton deserves to be starting.

Very odd, but not all that surprising. Of course, with the way the Sox are playing on this road trip, it may not matter. It all goes back to the odds of Richard and Fields still being traded. The roster really is quite a mess right now.
