Jonamac Orchard announces the start of their harvest season and the grand opening of their corn maze on Labor Day weekend, September 4-6. The theme for this year's corn maze design commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.

Did you know that scouting was first organized in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell in England? In 1909, Chicago's own William D. Boyce was on a trip to London when he became lost in a dense fog. A boy came to his aid and, after guiding him, refused a tip, explaining that as a Scout he would not take a tip for doing a good deed. This single kind act by an unknown Scout impressed Boyce enough to form the Boy Scouts of America in 1910.

So, be sure to honor Boyce and test your orienteering skills in the badge maze. The maze will be open weekends from September 4th to October 31st. Regular Corn Maze hours are Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In the spirit of scouting, $1 will be donated to Friends of Scouting from each paid admission to the corn maze during September. Scouts and their families will receive an additional 50% off admission on September 11th & 12th. Scouts will be allowed to camp overnight in the orchard's parking lot on Sept 11th and enjoy the after dark hayride and bonfires.

During the Grand Opening weekend only, everyone who finds their way out will receive an Apple Token, good for a ride on the Apple Train or a turn at the Apple Launcher or Apple Cannon.

Afterward plan to explore the pick-your-own apple orchard, barnyard activity area, and the country store and bakery (open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) featuring freshly picked apples, cider, apple pies, apple donuts, caramel apples, fresh breads, home made fudge, lunches, soft-serve ice cream, and sundaes. Jonamac Orchard is located just south of Malta on Shabbona Road.

* I am not currently affiliated with BSA. Years ago my son was a Cub Scout and a family commitment forced him to leave. While I am sad my son had to leave scouting, I am proud to know he chose to visit with his half-sister instead. Were there no conflict, I am confident he would still be scouting today.
