Insomnia is a symptom which can accompany several sleep, medical and psychiatric disorders, characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep despite the, blah, blah, blah. Thank you Wikipedia, but I think we all have our own definition for this one. Mine is, really, is it 3AM and I'm staring at the wall again, trying to figure out how the hell am I going to get to sleep. Insomnia has it's hold on over 64 million Americans, yes I said over 64 million Americans. Just thinking about that number will keep me up all night. If you've been reading my blogs, you understand how important a good nights sleep is, so let's try to tackle the big "I".

The best way to break down insomnia is through common sense. As I've stated before, I may be the Sleep Guru but I'm no Doctor. What I've learned over the years working as a sleep consultant is that if you listen to your body you will find the answers. Most people can cure insomnia on their own just by accepting the cause of their insomnia. Let me explain some of the causes to help you better understand.

Depression, anxiety, muscle pain, sleep apnea, snoring, herbs, caffeine, smoking, fear, stress, jet lag, noise, late night exercise, changes in work, restless leg syndrome, or writing this blog.

So this is where the common sense and self healing come in, remember accepting is the key. Let's play a little game I call "the if game".
If you drink caffeine all night do you think your going to bed?
If getting ready for bed includes responding to 50 emails, how much sleep will you get?
If you feel like making Pumping Iron 3 right before bed, forget closing those eyes.
If you live at State and Rush and sleep with your window open sirens are not the new sleep machine.
The others are a little bit harder to address, depression, anxiety, sleep apnea, and stress. The key to beating these is not giving up and trying a few self help cures I've learned over the years. I talked about what not to do, let's address what you can do.

Meditation before going to bed is very helpful. This will help you clear your mind of all the stress and worries. It's important to go to bed with a peaceful mind.
Take a warm bath or shower. This helps to relax the muscles, takes the tension out. Your body will loosen up and be more willing to sleep.
Drink caffeine free tea with chamomile. Chamomile is a natural sleep aid that I often use to help quite the noise before bed. Start with these three, if your're still having problems, leave me a comment and I'll see what I can do.

The leading-edge sleep doctors have discovered one important truth about chronic insomnia and premature awakening. These problems are caused by sleep-disordered breathing in about 90% of the cases.

You seem to be working on many things. Work on diagnosing the most obvious problem first. Spend a night in a certified sleep lab and let them check how you breathe when trying to sleep.

Yeah, you are right. Meditation, Yoga & proper diet is very helpful in this situation. According to resent research most consumers do not know what type of mattresses they sleep on. Except most people who sleep on a memory foam mattress will rave about it. University Mattress
