So being The Sleep Guru has a few perks, one of them is getting inside the Mattress industry for "almost" all the secrets. To do this I had to make a deal to spend the day with John B. a local mattress salesman here in Chicago. Why you ask would I choose to spend my day at a mattress store, so you don't have to. My blog is here to serve you, to make sure that every aspect of mattresses, sleep products, and sleep tips is covered.

John has been involved in the Mattress business for last 20 years, in that time he has sold over 35,000 mattress sets. I'm going out on a limb here but I think that qualifies him as a man who knows mattresses. He was kind enough to sit down with me to help us all understand the mind of a mattress salesman. With hours of dialog between us I'd like to share with you some of John's key points to sleep, mattresses, and what he hears the most of on the mattress sale floor.

1.  Biggest concern is finding the bed to match the comfort of your back and your pocket book.  It seems people get so lost in the cost of the product they lose sight of the end result, comfort. John assures us with all the different price points on the floor that problem is resolved quickly.

2. People coming in with a bad attitude because of a bad experience somewhere else.  This blame has to fall with us, the shopper.  Do your homework, it's easy to research retail companies online. Pick the one that sounds the best based off the reviews written and run with it.  It's also better to stay away from big box stores when shopping for a speciality item like a mattress.  Speciality salespeople tend to have more knowledge and time to spend with you.

3. Longevity of a mattress/understanding it's value. Most people have sticker shock when shopping for a mattress. When I first got in the business I had know idea the cost and of mattresses. It makes sense to me now knowing the importance of it but back then, damn! In some cases it's 10 years between shopping or your're a first time buyer.  Don't panic! When you factor in how long the mattress should last it comes out to pennies a night. I know, I know it's a horrible sales cliche sue me later.

4. Allow me to help!  Products have changed a lot over the years.  A ton of money is spent in R&D, take the time and let the salesman show you. As I stated before, it's up to ten years since the last purchase. Apply that time line to the advancement in the auto industry so you can picture all the possible changes.

I'll have to save a few points for later so I don't run out of stuff to talk about the first 2 weeks.  I'll leave you with this comment John said as I was walking out  "I'm amazed at the lack of concern people have investing in a mattress." I know he's in the business so it sounds like he's just trying to milk us for all the money we have.  I thought about that on my home and came to one conclusion, with 20 years under his belt, it was not a sales pitch it was passion.   The Sleep Guru comment board is open for business don't sleep on it.
