I'm back from my yearly trade shows and cross country trip researching sleep products, training, and better sleep for you.  Here's what I have coming in the next couple weeks, and I'm sorry for being gone for so long.  I missed Chicago.

1. My interview with Nichole from Protect-A-Bed.  She talks about better ways to save your mattress.

2. My night on the Tempur-Pedic Cloud mattress.  They can't make enough to keep up with sales, that's how good it is.  Some States have a two week wait, for a mattress!

3. The pillow that may have cured my snoring for good.

4. How to shop and buy a mattress online.

5. My shopping experience with my friends at Cheeky Chicago.  I have a feeling this one might be tops.

6. Finally a little contest with the readers, the winner get a new mattress.

I look forward to what's ahead.

Insomnia is a symptom which can accompany several sleep, medical and psychiatric disorders, characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep despite the, blah, blah, blah. Thank you Wikipedia, but I think we all have our own definition for this one. Mine is, really, is it 3AM and I'm staring at the wall again, trying to figure out how the hell am I going to get to sleep. Insomnia has it's hold on over 64 million Americans, yes I said over 64 million Americans. Just thinking about that number will keep me up all night. If you've been reading my blogs, you understand how important a good nights sleep is, so let's try to tackle the big "I".

I hear it everyday how unhappy people are about having to buy a new mattress.  Some go as far as to compare it to buying a used car.  Really people, a used car?  This should be number one on your furniture list, nothing else is as important.  Sure it's great to have that "look" in your house but without the comfort of a good night sleep it means nothing.  In other words' save some many for a mattress. Sleeping well is what makes us feel better about everything.  It's time to get prepared for your next mattress shopping experience.

The Pillow and the Mattress

A pillow is to a mattress what a nice shirt and tie are to a suit, a wonderful complement. Many of the topics I touch on deal with sleep and how to attain a good nights worth. One of the most over looked sleep products is the pillow.

The average weight of a human head is 10 pounds. Find something around you that weighs ten pounds, now raise it up over the floor a few inches and drop it. It's got some force behind it, doesn't it? Now imagine that's your head hitting the pillow without the proper support.

So being The Sleep Guru has a few perks, one of them is getting inside the Mattress industry for "almost" all the secrets. To do this I had to make a deal to spend the day with John B. a local mattress salesman here in Chicago. Why you ask would I choose to spend my day at a mattress store, so you don't have to. My blog is here to serve you, to make sure that every aspect of mattresses, sleep products, and sleep tips is covered.

I didn't have to fall back on my years of Industry experience for this one.  My dad snored the roof off, my fiance has named me the Big Bear, heck the guy next to me on the plane today was killing it.

Before I get going on this I do need to make it clear that I am not a Doctor.  I just want to share with you the effect snoring has had in my life and what I've done to help make it better.  My unofficial definition, making a crazy amount of noise while you'll sleep, causing tiredness, irritability, and lack of focus in the morning. Let's add keeping any and everybody trying to sleep next to you up all night.

Where do the old Mattresses go?

HOME_2914.JPG

I was buying a new phone and while waiting for my numbers to transfer the subject of what I do came up.

When I mentioned The Sleep Guru his first question was what do retailers do with all the old mattresses.  He said he was watching some undercover news program where they showed drivers bringing back old beds and the stores re bagging them for sale as new items.  I'll tell you the same thing I told him, if you look for s**t hard enough your sure to find it.  Then I went on to explain that at the end of every day the mattress fairy comes down, waves her magic wand and they disappear. Opps that's another story.

Back to what I was talking about. I've been in the business 15 years and have never seen a re bagged item go back out.  The fact of the matter is OSHA takes an active roll checking in with Mattress retailers to make sure that not only do they dispose of the mattress they can't even store them by new mattress sets.  Rule of thumb on this topic stick to the larger mattress retailers and you'll be safe. The Sleep Guru comment board is open for business, don't sleep on it.
