Shirtless Man of the Week: Charlie Hunnam of 'Sons of Anarchy'

When Charlie Hunnam took the role of Jax Teller on "Sons of Anarchy," he knew he could play the tough-but-tender member of a motorcycle club. But he wanted to make sure he looked like he belonged on top of his ride.

"I try to keep Jax about 12 to 15 pounds heavier than I cruise usually," Hunnam told me at the end of last season, saying that he began working out to get his body into believable shape. "I go to a 24-Hour Fitness. I usually go about 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock in the morning and I have the whole place to myself."

Well, he did it. When the FX series came back this fall, Hunnam showed fans how well the work paid off with a shower scene in the Sept. 8 episode called "Albification." In honor of the excellent series' Season 2 finale Tuesday, I'm naming Hunnam the latest "Shirtless Man of the Week."

I have no doubt he'd be embarrassed by the title. But not to worry Charlie, your outstanding acting in this series definitely overshadows the beefcake. You all can read my no spoilers review of tonight's season finale below, after the beefcake. Hunnam is both incredibly touching and extremely scary, just as Jax should be.

SONS OF ANARCHY
9 p.m. Tuesday, FX
out of four

The Emmy-worthy second season of "Sons of Anarchy" wraps with 90 minutes of explosive drama as Clay (Ron Perlman), Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and the SOA motorcycle club seek revenge on the band of white separatists who attacked Gemma (Katey Sagal) at the outset of the season. I watched earlier today, and all I'll say is that creator Kurt Sutter and Co. end the awesome season with some shocks and a lot of awe--as in I'm in awe of all the talent on display. Everything about this series, from the writing to the directing to the acting (Sagal especially), was supercharged this year. Emmys for all around.
