Will Lt. Scott (Brian J. Smith) getmore action this week on "Stargate Universe?" MGM photos

After its mind-bending "Time" story last week, "Stargate Universe" looks to be a little more straightforward this Friday with the episode called "Life."

But you never know with "SGU," which is one of the things I love about the show.

According to Syfy, Lt. Scott (Brian J. Smith) and Camile Wray (Ming-Na) will take their turns with the communications stones to see their loved ones back on Earth.

Camile Wray (Ming-Na) reunites with Sharon (Reiko Aylesworth) in "Life."

We'll finally meet Camile's girlfriend, Sharon (Reiko Aylesworth), but Scott's Earth trip may not be much of a homecoming. He doesn't really have a home to visit, Smith told me at the beginning of the season. As viewers already have learned, his family and the man who raised him are all dead.

In explaining Scott's dilemma on Earth, Smith also defended his flawed character, whose romantic dalliances have inexplicably caused "SGU" controversy this season.

"The big question is, 'What do I do? Who do I visit?' ... Everyone else has got a family," Smith told me. "I think the military became his family. The military became not only his job but it became his identity...

Smith believes Scott knows he makes mistakes, and it just kills him. He's incredibly hard on himself, Smith said, yet he still is weak at times.

"I think that he is held back by his need to never let anybody down," Smith said. "That is what I love about him so much too ... He's a great kid. I love him. It's rare to work on a character that just moves you like that."

Here's what Syfy has to say about "Life," which airs at 8 p.m. Friday on Syfy:

Using the communications stones, Lt. Scott (Brian J. Smith) and Camile Wray (Ming-Na) use their time back on earth to visit those they've left behind. Camile returns home to spend time with her partner, trying her best to make the strange circumstance normal. Meanwhile, Lt. Scott learns a past relationship might not have ended as he thought.

Aboard Destiny, Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) supervises the exploration of new areas of the ship. Looking for resources to make their everyday lives easier, the crew stumbles upon a piece of Ancient technology that carries the promise of a way home. While somewhat familiar with the find, Dr. Rush can't guarantee the safety of using it, bringing him and Col. Young (Louis Ferreira) to a standoff on what to do.
