Since "Saturday Night Live" just completed a week off, airing a repeat of the not-so-great Gerard Butler episode on Saturday, I thought this would be a good time to rate the show's regular cast members.
Now in it's 35th season, I'd say "SNL" is holding about a C average. Some weeks have stood out--like Taylor Swift's Nov. 7 episode. But some--January Jones' Nov. 14 ep--have been complete and total fails.
Sure, the success or failure of a week has a lot to do with the hosts and their ability to inspire good writing or deliver laughs. But I'd say it's mostly up to the writers and the regular cast to make those guest hosts look good. So how are the cast members doing? Here's how I'd rate them.
Am I on or off? Let me know how you think in the comments. "SNL" begins a 3-week stint of new episodes on Dec. 5.

I LOVED "The Mellow Show" skit! I don't watch any episodes of SNL unless I like the host, so I am glad Joseph Gordon-Levitt was there for that, because it was amazing.
You should list the 10 best guest hosts next!!!

I replayed The Mellow Show over and over. Loved it too! Thanks for reading and watch for that 10 best/worst hosts post soon.

I agree, Kristin Wiig is used too much. Plus, she had a guest spot on FOTC, so she's fine. Although I do love "PEg," the target lady! Keenan Thompson always funny. I love when he does the stepmother character -- where (s)he takes some new stepdaughter shopping.

Peg is sort of the same: Too much is too much. I'd forgotten about Kenan's mom character. Good work. Thanks for commenting.

For some reason I always get Will Forte and Jason Sudekis confused...
And ugh, I totally have to disagree with you on Bill Hader being number one. The fact that he can't keep a straight face says he isn't a very good actor. Also, he isn't a very good actor in general. Reminds me too much of Jimmy Fallon in terms of comedic potential and skill. I'd put him right behind Samberg and put Wiig on top. She's awesome.

Also, I LOVE "What Up With That?" It's probably the funniest skit on the show right now. If they did some sort of weird Thursday spinoff featuring this like they did with Weekend Update I would seriously consider watching it for the whole half-hour.

Not sure Obama has been president long enough to gain consistency in his skits. I don't think this means they're afraid of making fun of dems -- ie. they've already jumped on the Obama-has-done-nothing-yet bandwagon -- i think it just means we all had eight years to realize what a doofus W. was.
Good list. We agree with the order 100%!

Bobby Moynihan behind Abby Elliott? Bitch, please. Abby Elliott is possibly the worst performer in the history of the show. She screws up her simplest tasks, like when she walked on as Joanie from "Mad Men" in the January Jones monologue. Moynihan hasn't had a breakout sketch but he gets laughs in a lot of scenes. He's solid.

Co-sign. Elliot isn't even at Cheri O'Teri status. That's saying something.

I fully agree with your assessment. Bobby Monyhan who indeed. He's a wannabe Belushi. And Kristin Wiig has overrun her stay. I HATE Gilly. Stupid, lame, and all of her skits are too friggen long.
What up with dat?

kristin wiig is the worst, overused or not

Kristen Wiig is definitely the #1 talent and is carrying the show right now. Hubby and I love Gilly and almost named our newly adopted dog after that character, because they share talents for being destructive and disobedient.
Michaela's firing was a bad decision. She's funny/smart and we would have seen great characters come from her. Bitchpleeze was awesome! Was I the only one to race to my computer to see if that actually existed? I think not.
One of Bobby Moynihan's first sketches was a waiter who kept smelling pepper. It was hilarious and I still think about that sketch, hoping that he has similar opportunities.
Fred Armisen is sinking this season. It's hard to find his other characters funny with his awful Barack impression clouding my perspective.
Will Forte needs to bring back Tim Calhoun!!
Keenans' characters always make me laugh - he is genuinely funny and the phrase, "Fix it!!" has inserted itself into daily conversation between me and my husband.
Andy is great most of the time. I loved Cathy and wish he would drop that in from time to time. His vacant T'Shane makes me laugh long after the show is over.
Bill Hader's Vinny Vedicci is a home run, as are most of his characters and impressions.
That being said, the show has been hard to watch lately because there are more bad sketches than good. It seems like most of the sketches are thrown in just to make the show as long as it needs to be. So, FIX IT!!

Yes, the show isn't consistently funny this season. I have to keep KW down from No. 1 just because her characters are so similar. Thanks for commenting.

I thought Bobby Moynihan's Guy Ferretti was pretty funny, but it was barely in the skit, I'd like to see it again...
I agree Will Forte has not been used nearly enough this season, same with Jason Sudeikis, they are my 2 favorites on the show, anything skit that has Will with a mustache is gold...
Keenan has finally started to grow on me, I thought he was absolutely terrible when he first started, but What's up with that? has been my favorite skit of the season thus far.
And Kristen is great, but she is kinda used waaaaay too much
Curt Wagner said:
Thanks for commenting. I didn't even remember Guy Ferretti, oops!

Oh and what happened to the the "Two A-holes" skit, with Jason and Kristen? Did they stop having that a long time ago or am I not paying attention?
Ryan Kiefer said:
No, I haven't seen that yet this season. It was stretching it in terms of use last season, so I doubt they'd use it again. Then again...

Anytime they want to stop relying on the "fake talk show" format for their skits is fine by me. For God's sake, I watched the show for the first time in about two years a couple of weekends ago and all but two of the sketches were talk show format. WTF? And of the ones that weren't (one was a lame "fighting at the Thanksgiving table" skit that merely consisted of people yelling at each other for no reason...how original) sucked. Seriously, start counting how many talk show format sketches they use per show. It's sad, pathetic...and not funny. Are there NO writers with new ideas on that staff? C'mon, Hannibal...
