'SNL' recap: Host Gerard Butler's OK, but Seth Meyers rules

If you like watching "Saturday Night Live" players crack up during sketches, you probably loved last night's "SNL."

Anheuser-Busch sponsored most of the Gerard Butler-hosted "SNL," introducing never-before-seen dress rehearsal outtakes from past "SNL" seasons. They were great, but I admit that I'm one of those giggle-fit fans. (Harvey Keitel, Bill Hader, Sean Hayes and the wall-challenged Robot all had me giggling too.)

The outtakes were great, but the highlight for me--as is usually the case--was Seth Meyer's "Weekend Update." Meyers' sharp wit and cutting commentary were back in full force. I've listed some of the best below.

On Rod Blagojevich, Sharon Osbourne and Sinbad joining the upcoming "Celebrity Apprentice" season: "I think we've finally reached the point in our society where 'celebrity' just means 'mammal.'"

On the Dow Jones topping the 10,000 mark: "Hooray shouted 15 million unemployed Americans watching CNN in their pajamas in the middle of the day."

On the Louisiana Justice of the Peace who refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple: "[The justice] defended his action by saying, 'I'm not a racist, I just don't believe in missing the races that way.' OK, tip for all you racists out there: Never follow the denial of racism with the definition."

On a company suing NBC for $2 million: "Jokes on them, we don't have $2 million."

On President Obama pledging to end the military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy: "Even better for gays, it's being replaced with a new policy, 'Truth or Dare.'" This led to his first guests, two guys from New Jersey who are in the military, which I loved.

On 7/11's new plastic wrap that keeps bananas firm for five days: "If your banana remains firm for more than five days, call a doctor immediately."

On the Balloon Boy hoax: With a screen shot of CNN's live coverage of the balloon floating over Colorado, Meyers said, "On Thursday a boy hid in a box. I guess that [referring to screen] was a faster way to tell that story."

Later, Meyers talked to the Colorado Balloon itself.

On Republican Sen. Olympia Snow: "Snow warned Thursday that while she crossed party lines to vote for the new health care bill in committee, that doesn't mean that she will vote for it when it reaches the Senate floor, adding 'Come on guys, chase me!'"

I'm giving a shout out here to Meyers, Kristin Wiig and Amy Poehler in two outtakes. In one, while Wiig was playing Madonna in front of the "Update" desk, Poehler accidentally snaps a pencil in her mouth, effectively ending the skit with laughter. In another, Poehler busts out while reporting on an orangutan that took off a tourist's pants. In the third, Meyers tells a groaner about seal hunters who, after being freed from ice, were able to "kill a whole bunch of seals." "Oh Seth," Poehler says. "That was for you, dress rehearsal. Happy Earth Day. That joke will not be recycled," Meyers responds.

Back to the live show, where Meyers had good moments with other guests:

Meyers translates Gerard Butler.

Meyers welcomes P.G.A.D sufferer Tamara Parks. Best line? "Thank you for coming."

I loved Kristin Wiig in that "Weekend Update" appearance, but poor gal is getting stretched too thin on "SNL." Why aren't they using Abby Elliott, Jenny Slate or Nasim Pedr more often? Wiig was in tons of sketches last night, and although I loved her in Butler's opening bit and the "Beauty & the Beast" skit (She said "Ass Castle"), her "New Secretary" character was truly annoying.

Beauty & The Beast

Click the following links for the losers, such as gays-in-the-military themed "The Spartans" sketch and the bad "Daveheart" sketch. Also, I liked about two seconds of Dwayne Johnson's surprise part in "The Rock Obama" cold open.

"SNL" isn't back with a new episode until Taylor Swift hosts and performs on Nov. 7. Below are a few other winners from last night's show--although I'm still not sure why "SNL" bothered to bring James Franco on the show when they didn't even let him speak in the "What Up With That?" sketch. (I loved the sketch, especially Jason Sudeikis' dancing.)

What did you think of the latest "SNL"?

Yep. Sorry, my bad. A typo. I meant to say SWIFT, not HICKS. Thanks for the catch, dudette.

My bad. Typo. It's Taylor Swift, not Taylor Hicks. What do you think of her hosting?

I would have made the same mistake and said Taylor Hicks. I try to forget Swift because she has no talent, just a pretty face. I would a lot rather look at and listen to Hicks.
They should have him come on and be Teen Angel, now that would be worth watching.

Maybe she will have him on as a surprise?

I always thought that would be funny. She has said in interviews before that people confuse the two all the time. If he wasn't going to be in Florida that week, I would be very hopeful for a Two Taylor SNL showing.
