PRIMEVAL
8 p.m. Saturday, BBC America
Tune in or out?
out of four.
The British monster mash returns with new characters, new crises and most of all, new and bigger, badder beasties. In the new season, Nick Cutter (Douglas Henshall) and his team of dinosaur-finders race to close time/space anomalies that allow not just prehistoric creatures to cross into our world—but all manner of beings that are steeped in myths and legends.
Yeah, it’s a silly premise—but loads of fun.
If you prefer human foes, you’ve got them. Cutter’s deliciously devious wife, Helen, (played with gusto by Juliet Aubrey), still is lurking about with more than a few schemes—and surprising tricks—up her sleeve. But she’s not the only baddie blocking the team’s progress. An old nemesis of James Lester (Ben Miller) sets up shop near the Ark, and a snoopy reporter causes trouble for Abby (Hannah Spearritt), Connor (Andrew Lee Potts) and Jenny (Lucy Brown).
It’s not all gloom and doom for the team, though. The first episode bounces with jokey fun and the introduction of archeologist Sarah Page (Laila Rouass), who convinces Connor he’s the victim of an ancient Egyptian curse. Every episode has its lighter moments—including the introduction of a troublesome cop played by Jason Flemyng. But things turn more serious in Episode 3—when Helen’s evil plan causes a deadly surprise that sends the team in a tailspin. (I’m still reeling a bit too.)
No matter how silly this twisty tale gets, it remains a conspiracy-lover’s dream.
