DaJuan Johnson and Alex Loynaz recreate the "Real World: San Francisco" commitment of Sean Sasser and Pedro Zamora. MTV photos
You’d think a movie version of the life of “Real World: San Francisco” standout Pedro Zamora (Alex Loynaz, right) would try its damnedest not to seem like a documentary.
Because really, why not just make a documentary? MTV has the real footage of many of the scenes the movie recreates (in pics). And do we really need to see actors play the “Real World” cast as they are interviewed about Zamora?
It’s silly. But Zamora's life wasn't. I remember being enthralled and saddened by his story at the time. He insisted on sharing everything about his HIV/AIDS experience in order to educate America. The film continues that effort (which is why I'm giving it that third star).
The film really caught my interest when it depicted Zamora’s life off-camera, before his “Real World” experience made him a nationally recognized AIDS educator and the first real face of AIDS on TV, and after, as his struggle came to an end in his sister’s Florida home.
He died the night the final episode of “RW: SF” aired, in 1994, at age 22, far away from the cameras.
Matt Burr plays the infamous roomie Puck, who didn't get along with Pedro (Loynaz).
