Don't miss 'Chuck' in 3D; where to get glasses

user-pic

Posted at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21

When the spy-fi comedy “Chuck” finally returns to NBC at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, it’ll be done in 3D, the night after 3D commercials for SoBe Lifewater and the film "Monsters vs. Aliens" air during Super Bowl XLIII.

In "Chuck Versus the Third Dimension," our hero Chuck (Zachary Levi) foils a plan to kill rock star Tyler Martin (Dominic Monaghan of “Lost”). To thank Chuck, Tyler takes him out on the town, which of course leads to trouble.

The episode’s B-story involves the always funny Morgan (Josh Gomez), who wins a pair of backstage passes to Tyler's show and runs a contest among Buy More employees, including Big Mike's (Mark Christopher Lawrence) old football buddy Jimmy (ex NFL player Jerome Bettis), to see who gets to go with him.

Series creator Josh Schwartz told the io9 Web site that one highlight of the 3D episode is seeing Jeff (Scott Krinsky) eat a urinal cake. Can't wait for that!

Fans can get the 3-D glasses for free at SoBe Lifewater displays at retail outlets such as K-Mart, Dollar General, CVS and Target (on Jan. 31). If you don’t want to hunt all over for them, call Pepsi at 1-800-646-2904 and they will send you the glasses.

Shame on NBC for delaying the return of so many shows. For my rant on the subject, click the link after the video below. For more on "Chuck," click here and here.

I HATE WAITING ...

Sure, had NBC not delayed the return of "Chuck" until after the Super Bowl, we wouldn't be getting the "Chuck" in 3D episode. But in general, one of the things that really bothers me about broadcast TV around the holidays is that network honchos use them as an excuse to delay the return of their regular shows.

Fans hate those delays. We want our shows back, and not another dance competition. And for shows like NBC’s “Chuck,” “Life” and “Heroes,” months-long delays can be killer. They are excellent series—especially “Chuck” (in my Top 5 current shows)—that are fighting to remain on TV due to their unfortunately low ratings.

So shame on NBC for not helping these series by holding off their return to TV until February. And for what—“Superstars of Dance”? “Chuck,” “Life” and even "Heroes" deserve more than this, NBC.

What do you think, readers? Please comment.

I think bringing a borderline show like Chuck back after two months with an episode that many people won't be able to watch is just another incredibly stupid idea from the geniuses at NBC. And added to that Chuck is now competing against top-rated House instead of low-rated Terminator and I think we can kiss Chuck goodbye, unless by some miracle the entire sci-fi loving audience of Terminator shifts to Chuck.

Curt's reply: Let's hope that happens, Kenneth. And run out and get those glasses, my brotha!

"I think bringing a borderline show like Chuck back after two months with an episode that many people won't be able to watch is just another incredibly stupid idea from the geniuses at NBC."

Actually, judging from the much-hyped 3D episode of Medium a while back... you'll still be able to watch it, it's just that certain effects will look different (well, wrong) to those without the 3D glasses... and for that matter, much of it will probably not actually be in 3D, only select portions of the footage will be. I'm hoping this is the case, because I did not know about the whole glasses thing until today. You're right that it's stupid though, because not everyone is going to realize all that, and that's not even considering that it's just a cheesy idea to begin with (granted, I think it could at least be *entertainingly* cheesy in Chuck, compared to Medium, where frankly it just came off as a little eye-roll-inducing).

"And added to that Chuck is now competing against top-rated House instead of low-rated Terminator and I think we can kiss Chuck goodbye, unless by some miracle the entire sci-fi loving audience of Terminator shifts to Chuck."

That's actually what worries me most. :(

And to think Dollhouse's premiere getting shifted to a Friday Night Death Slot worried me! D: At least THAT slot barely has any competition, as well as sitting right next to Terminator, which already has an audience conducisive to a sci-fi series featuring a strong female lead or two.

Chuck, on the other hand, is going up against a mega-hit still in its prime. My only hope is that NBC isn't doing what I think Fox sometimes does, which is look for an excuse to cancel something good just because it's not a superhit.

Also, they damn well better include 3D glasses with the inevitable DVD set. :P

Curt's reply: Like I said, you do not even need the glasses to enjoy this great ep. The 3D stuff is OK, but by no means makes the ep. Run out and get the glasses at SoBe water stands in stores on Monday if you want that experience.

It is sad that Chuck is facing House now, but House doesn't thrill me anyway. I do hope more people turn on to Chuck. It, 30 Rock and The Office are TV's 3 best comedies I think.

Makes me think of a line John Cleese had on an episode of Flying Circus, in a filler between sketches. Playing a network employee, he explains, "I'd like to be in programming. Unfortunately, I have a degree."

Curt's reply: LOL. Thanks for the comment, John.

is it in 3D YES OR NO

Curt's reply: It is in 3D, but it's jsut as good watching without the glasses. The 3D effects do not make the episode better. In fact, they were a little hard for me to see.

My 3D glasses (which I received at a movie theater) don't work on this episode. :(

Curt's reply: They worked better for me closer to screen, or on my computer. Thanks for the comment.

I personally was very peeved at this whole 3D thing. With 3D glasses on, everything (at least to me) looks purple. Without them, I end up seeing more then 1-2 layers for every object on screen. I believe they should have had a 'normal' Chuck on at the same time, in a different channel. I hope they don't keep this 3D thing up. (Or at least make better 3D glasses, that don't block light or color.)

Curt's reply: Yeah it was messed up a bit. Worked best on my computer actually. I think they have a "normal" version on nbc.com or hulu.com to watch. Thanks for commenting.

I watched some of CHUCK in 3D on Monday, or at least tried to, but the glasses were/are a joke. I don't see how this can be called a 3D advancement when the image is so dark and AWKWARD. The blue side of the glasses is way too dark to be practical. Although the 3D effect is quite good, it is totally nullified by the darkness of the image, the reduction in color differentiation, and the severe eyestrain after about 20 minutes. Somebody really has their head up their butt promoting this 3D concept!

Curt's reply: Thanks for your comments, Jeffree

Looked for the glasses everywhere in my area and

had no luck at all, this includes stores where

they allegedly they were supposed to stock them.

Curt's reply: You didn't miss much on the 3D front. Great ep, but not because of 3D effects
